I recently acquired a new Ruger RSM in .458 Lott. I'm considering using 45-70 trapdoor loads at first until I have a chance to have the action bedded. A load I'd like to try would be 40 grs. of IMR 3031 under a Lazercast 405 gr. cast lead bullet (no GC) with a roll crimp. My question is, can I just use published trapdoor loading data in the longer Lott case? I'm wondering if the extra space in the Lott case will pose a problem with a powder like IMR 3031. Thoughts and comments?

Look for reduced loads in the .458 Lott section of your reloading manuals instead. George

I have reloading manuals from Hornady, Speer, Nosler and Lyman. None of them list loads for the .458 Lott, reduced or otherwise.

I don't find Lott data at Accurate Arms or Hogdgon's web site, but there is data on Steve's Reloading pages: http://stevespages.com/458_8.html Is a place to start. Steve tends to run a little warm I think. Is also some data on the AccurateReloading Reloading pages: http://www.accuratereloading.com/458lott.html Do a google too! Check the A-Square manual. George

A light load of 3031 could be dangerous without filler. I found that using a load of slow powder like 4350 or 4831 provides low velocities and substantially lower recoil.
