I am thinking about building a .577 NFB rifle for a project. I would like to stay with a 600 to 650 grain cast bullet at around 1800 FPS. I need to find someone who has loading information on this kind of a load. I would also like opinions on the following: Is it possible to put 2 3/4 inch .577 loads up in three inch cases by using foam filler wads to take up the excess space? Thanks

Graeme Wright's book has Black and NFB loads listed...probably a good source.

Biebs, I have that book and it is a good one, but unfortunately not much info on the .577 NFB loads.

Try Cartridges of the World, 11th edition (though 12 may well be out by now.) It will have some information on the cartridge; however, not all cartridges in the book have loading data attached, and the 577 NFB may well be one of them. Respects, Phill

I too hope to, someday, build a double in 577 Light Nitro/NFB. I had trouble finding his article again on NE. But perseverence paid off and I discovered he ow has a website. So here's a link. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the "Greener 577" link. There are also some other great stories of other guns he has restored and/or used. Great stuff. Enjoy. http://www.marrakai-adventure.com.au/Hunting.html#A5

Bird: Also keep an eye out for Ross Seyfried's stuff in Double Rifle Journal. He has tremendous first hand experience loading for all sorts of the old Brit expresses and nitros, along with the requisite passion! I briefly played with a Martini in .577 3-inch BPE, but only shot it with black. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

Thanks to everyone who helped to answer some of my questions. I still need opinions on whether or not I can load light nitro for black loads into three inch cases by using foam fillers. Bob

2 3/4 or 3 inch will make little difference since you are looking at a lot of filler in each. I ran across a great 577 article that is well written and has info you can use. www.rbsiii.com/PaperPatchedBullets/index.html Cheers, John Give me COFFEE and nobody gets hurt

Same as light loads in my 585 with smaller amounts of a faster powder if I wanted, don't like fluff fillers, I just fill space with 24ga ready made shotgun wads from BPI or Precision reloading.Ed MZEE WA SIKU

I use 3" loads in my 3.25" 500 NE (Ruger no 3 action) with a foam filler often, so should be ok in your 577, I would think Cheers spinna

The quick answer is yes you can with fillers. The easier answer is to use a powder that doesn't need a filler like 5744 or Trail Boss. If you want to have some fun, try a case full of fg or cannon grade black, or any of the coarse granule substitutes. Boom, smoke, & low recoil. The coarser the granulation in black the lower the pressure & recoil. these are my 600jdj(577 nitro blown out to 620) cast plinkers I'm working up right now using 65-70grs of 5744 & an 800gr bullet. Shoot great.

Thanks Bill. Life can get dull if you always hang out below .577"'s

To Phill,600 Overkill,Bill/Oregon,Spinna,Ed Hubel,Phatman,Biebs,Bloodnative, and last but not least, Mike Brooks, Thanks to all of you for your help and good advice. I have eagerly sought out everything that I can find on the .577, and especially anything written by my old friend Marrakai. Tony helped me alot in the beginning by giving me a good understanding of the best ways to balance a double rifle and to keep it's weight down to a manageable amount. Please, anyone having any more info on the .577 full nitro or the NFB loads, don't be afraid to chime in here. Information on the various .577's is scarce at best, and some of it is extremely hard to find, so if you know anyhting about the .577 at all, lets hear it! Bob H.

To Me, the 577 2 3/4 light nitro on a Martini Henry has been a fantasy gun for a long time. A simple elegant single shot that would be a joy to own and shoot. I wish you all the luck with yours. Cheers, John Give me COFFEE and nobody gets hurt

John: Here's that .577 3-inch on a Martini action. I got it originally from Congomike here on this board. It now lives in Cutbank Montana. I shot it but once or twice with a lightly compressed case full of FFg and a 600-grain Woodleigh soft. Very manageable. Do the stock and operating lever in the Westley Richards style and you have exactly what I have in mind. I thought the 3 inch couldn't make the turn in chambering. I quess it depends on the bullet. Cheers, John Give me COFFEE and nobody gets hurt
