Who uses 416 Ruger? For those who do, does anyone use 400 gr. Barnes banded solids and if so what MV do you get? Also have you had problems locating brass and reloading equipment? Any info would be helpful - there may be one in my future.

Good caliber, I have a .416 Ruger Alaskan. I load 350 gr Speer Mag-Tip and Barnes X bullets at 2450 fps using RE15. I haven't tried the 400 gr solids, however I would expect a muzzle velocity of about 2300 fps.

I got my rifle about 2 years ago, and at the time I had difficulty finding dies and brass. I eventually got a set of Redding dies that includes a neck sizer, and a few hundred Hornady cases. I should be set for a long time. Smiler

Hello,

I have used the .416 Ruger for two trips to Africa. Built it using a Interarms-Mauser action, Lilja barrel and a walnut stock.

Have used Redding dies, including their neck size die, Hornaday Brass and Federal 215 LRM Primers. I used a Night Force Scope 3 x 15 for the first two trips but found that the scope was too heavy with the recoil. Leupold recently came out with a 2 to 12 VX6 illuminated. I JB welded the bases, rosined the Warne QD rings to the scope and used strong locktite on all the pins. Have about 100 rounds through the rifle now and not any problems with the scope thus far. I shall be shooting it in a few hours time as we are off to Zimbabwe in 10 days for some big an little things.

Used the Barnes bullets all in 400 grain with great results. The rifle using both IMR 4320 and IMR 4895 gives 1 inch groups at 100 yards. With the new Leupold "Custom Dial System" it is set dead on @ 100 yds. A very minute adjustment and it is dead on at 150 and 200 Yards. I have shot everything from buffalo to duiker (at 280 meters) from the sticks with one shot using the Barnes 400 Gr.

As good as the Barnes bullets are I have this year switched to North Fork Bullets, they are much less costly, superbly accurate, equally so both with the solid monolithic and the cupped point expanding monolithic. They shoot exactly to the same point of impact. The most important feature however along with accuracy is they make the rifle 100 times easier to clean than the Barnes. Cleaning any rifle we have shot using the Barnes is your worst dream to clean. The North Fork is a piece of cake. That is especially true on the Double Rifle where there are two barrels to clean. We use a Double on elephant..

Redding loading equipment is easily available if you call the Factory in NY. They have all the bits for the .416 Ruger as I just called and ordered another Seating Die for the .416 Ruger.

Oh, sorry they were using the North Fork moving out right at 4300.

If you would like any other details, send us a PM and we shall be happy to assist.

From squirrels to Cape Buffalo, it has done it all for me! Also have the 375 and have used it for years on deer, elk, bear and WOLF! These Alaskans are probably my favorite rifles.

What action and what barrel contour do you plan on using? Do you want synthetic, walnut or laminated? Will you be doing the work yourself? There are a few places out there from which you may obtain good walnut, and laminated at a reasonable prices.

I have two laminated stocks for a Mauser action, hand rubbed oil finished, 22 lines per inch wrap around chequering, steel pistol grip caps, ready to fit up is that is of any help.

I was thinking walnut but on the 416 ruger barrled action from the Ruger Alaskan. I have ideas about stock shape & I am not sure who
will do the work - maybe I will try but not for sure. Is anyone making a good walnut stock for
Rugers ?
