Type A Mauser in 404 Jeff
Hi
I have had the itch to get a 375 plus gun for a while and I have come across this gun.
I have not seen it but I am told that the stock was redone and the steel reblued.
Now the bad news apparently the stock was sanded aggressively .. even the checkering.
AND the bluing is a mess as well.
On the up side the bore is 100%.
So I need some advice ( I realize pictures would be helpful ... the current owner does not have computer acess)
Worst case senerio I have to restock it and reblue it ... Is it worth it?
It is my (limited) understanding that this is a good gun. Do I just use it as a shooter and over look the faults or do I repair it and have a classic?
Any and all advice is welcome.
Thanks gentlemen.

450/400Sounds like a proper candidate for restocking and bluing...

tiggertateA bad re-blue isn't harmfull in itself unless the gun was over-polished on a power wheel. I've seen some nice guns ground down so far they can never be brought back to decent condition. In that case it would be a shooter as-is.
If it is just a matter of poor application of the bluing, the corners are still sharp and the flats are still flat, you have a candidtae for some improvements.

MasteriflemanA lot would depend on the asking price????????????
I beleive it has been over polished.
What would a shooter be worth?

tiggertateA matter of degrees, really. It sounds ruined as a restorable classic (just a guess, having not seen it). That makes it worth less to me than maybe to you. $500 would be my tops.
Thanks for the comments.
I just realized that I forgot to mention the gun was also made by Jeffery.

jeffeossothen it is a crime that it was ruined nad is a $500 shooter...
the jeffery part only comes into play if it is reasonably as it left the factory ... to be over sanded, reshaped, over polished, and badly blued...
it's like jame's dean 356 .. it has NIL value as a porsche

tiggertateI don't mean to say that is its only value. This is a tough crowd in that regard. It could bring a lot more on one of the auction sites.
Thanks for the input.
Yes maybe a tough crowd but a very knowledgeable crowd too.
Thanks for the help!
Sanded stock and over polished metal on type A Mauser! That is a crime!
