375 H&H Flanged single shot
375 H&H Flanged single shot
I am considering to go to Africa again (ideally Namibia or Botswana) to hunt plains game - Kudu, Warthog, Eland, Sable, etc. I would pack no bolt action rifle but a single shot. Why? I love single shots and have always loved that concept. I would take with me my customized Ruger No. 1 in 375 H&H Flanged. I think the 260 grain Nosler Partition or 270 grain Northfork should be sufficient/ideal. What do you think about my choice, guys? Have you travelled there with a single shot rifle only?

wildmansixSounds like a capital idea to me! I took a TC Encore in 9.3x74R on my first safari.

xausaI have a set of .375 H&H Flanged Magnum barrels on order for my Krieghoff Teck O/U double rifle. I think the rimmed cases are the way to go with single shots and double rifles.

tom oI took a custom 300 H&H Ruger #1 on 2 safaris. Worked beautifully, and made me really pick my shots.
PH thought it was a wonderful rifle after using it for camp meat, and the trackers called it "One bullet".
Enjoy yourself.

Brian CanadaI love single shots. I use a 577NE single shot and I have built a 30-30 single shot for my grandson for plains game. Your choice of cartridge in fine.
Sometimes I think that I would like a 356 winchester or a .444marlin or 45-70 necked down in a single shot. Single shots are cool!

impala#03I hunt with single shots and have for years. Have used a 338 WM and 375 H&H on three trips to Africa. No problems for me.

Brandon.GleasonSounds like a hell of a rifle! I'd bet Ruger would sell a ton of them if they did a special run.

Tim CarneySpent most of August and early September in Namibia and Botswana with my Rigby (Webley patent) action falling block with two hand-detachable barrels, one in .375 H&H flanged magnum and the other in .300 H&H flanged magnum. The .300 barrel is scoped only; the .375 can use a scope or its iron sights.
Much enjoyed the hunting. With the .375 barrel I use 300 grain Swift A-Frame. With the .300 barrel it's the 200-grain either Nosler partition or Swift A-Frame. You'll not have any problem with the Ruger and high quality partition bullets for plains game.

AtkinsonI have hunted both PG and DG with a single shot on one occasion, and PG alone, as well as deer and elk with a Ruger no. l=S on several occasions...
Its fun, but I would not hunt DG with one again, maybe Im just getting old and consider it a stunt of sorts on DG..Still like them for non dangerous game, they make me use more care, and perhaps shoot a bit better when I know I only have one shot. Ive always had mixed emotions and the ss has caused me some grief over the years, opertunities lost over one shot on several occasions..Just my two bits pros and cons included.

df06Nothing wrong with your choice, but that’s way more cartridge than you need.

DaleYour rifle should work fine. I took a Ruger #1 in 9.3x62 to Africa in 2016 and shot nyala, eland, and waterbuck. I used the 250 gr. Barnes TTSX bullet. I took the same rifle again this year and took zebra, sable, civet, duiker, and honey badger. I also took along a Ruger #1A in 7x57 and got a bushbuck with it. The only dangerous game I have taken in Africa was a buffalo with a Ruger M77 African in .458 Lott. I could have done it with a single shot easily, as it was a one-shot kill. I really enjoy my #1s and do not feel handicapped hunting with them.
