458 Lott?? Login/Join

Well since Ruger is now offering a 458 Lott in their magnum M77 I have been seriously considering getting rid of my old Ruger magnum M77 416 Rigby in favor of a new 458 Lott.

What say you. Would this swap make sense?

That depends on what you're going to do with it and what's already in your gun safe. Okie John

Todd,

I am also thinking about the new 458 chambering of the Ruger Magnum. However, I do not like the Lott so I would rechamber it to a bigger 45 caliber if I ever get one. Cheers! Ming

Why don't you like the Lott?

Socrates,

I don't like the Lott for no particular reason. I just don't understand why would it be better than the 450 Ackley since both are based on the same parent case and the 450 Ackley is a much better design. The 450 Ackley would be the one that should have been standarized, not the Lott. Cheers! Ming

Hi Ming,
I have a preference for the 450 Ackley also. I had and shot one for four years and with the WW748 powder was able to reach 2380 to 2400 fps with great accuracy. In the Bruno 602 it would hold five. Once the cases were fired you could partially neck size and headspace off the shoulder.

We had an election in the marketplace, and the .458 Lott won. It is now a factory standard.

The record in the marketplace is littered with the corpses of technically better alternatives.

I would keep the .416 Rigby Ruger because "forty is enough gun". [Wink]

OK Ming, that's a perfect reason, and one I agree with. [Big Grin]

However, a Lott should be pretty easy to rebore to 450 Ackley, and then you can shoot 458 win mag, Lott ammo, and fireform Ackley Cases, all at the same time.

Well I prefer my 450 Barnes Supreme over the Ackley. It has been around since the 1940's and I think everybody else copied off of that one, Mr. Ackley included. [Razz]

Thanks 470 Mbogo for the tip. I am getting ready to have a 450 Ackley built on my 458 Win. CZ 550. I have all the reloading components ready. The longer wait would be the Express stock from McMillan. I got one of their Express stocks for my Winchester 70 and can't wait to have another one.

DaggaRon,

I assume that your 450 Barnes Supreme is similar to the 450 Ackley. Regardless of the name, a good cartridge is always a good cartridge. I like the 450 Ackley better simply because it took full advatange of the 375 H&H case and it has a real parallel neck. This leads to a greater case capacity and it should achieve 2400 fps without a pressure problem. I really careless if it can digest the 458 Win. round or not. If I want to shoot my 458 Win. then I would use my Winchester 70 instead. I just cannot stand the lame excuse to have a Lott just so one can shoot the 458 Win. with it.

Have fun guys! Cheers! Ming
