Can a muzzle brake be avoided with this cartridge if the rifle weighs in at 15# with a 34" heavy barrel? The application is a single shot rifle for long range coyotes. Firing positions will be from shooting sticks and/or a tripod mounted rest. Thanks. ~Holmes

With a triple X pad on it it will shoot like a 300 Winchester. How many coyotes do you have out there. ![]() Take care, 470 Mbogo

quote: I should have known you would be one to respond to this inquiry! As you have surmised, I have given up on the .50 Peacekeeper coyote rifle. I just can't see it happening without a brake. I took out my 9lb .458 WinMag #1 and shot 40 rounds from various sitting positions in the field using the Hornady heavy factory load. (What kind of blend do they have in those things? Noticeably stouter than my reloads!) This test convinced me the Peacekeeper would be too much for a field rifle without compensation. I already buy a lot of 300 grain .375 bullets for my H&H so it will really simplify things and give me a flat shooter in my favourite calibre. Plus, I can use all my current loading equipment. Definitely a financial plus! Coyote populations are very high right now and rabbits are down drastically. Fox are up as are badgers. I'm going to have this thing throated for the 300 grain SPBT bullets as they are my preference. I will also try the 250 SPBT and see how well they shoot for me. My H&H likes them but at three hundred yards I get even better groups with the 300s. Tried the 235s in my H&H and never had much luck with them. I'm going to be installing a Kepplinger single set trigger and using Mould's speed lock hammer. I've gotten pretty good at tuning the barrel/fore end on the #1s so hopefully this will end up making a nice medium bore varmint rifle. When it is done I fully expect to get the leading role in Quigley Down Under - Part Two! I'll be requesting a red head instead of the brunette.... Thanks for the data. ~Holmes

Holmes: My experience, in memory, with Remington ammo, was that their powder choices sucked. Big boom, low velocity, and accuracy, and shitty bullets. Just because the round booms, doesn't mean it's fast, efficent, or accurate. You are making me regret not getting the bullet puller for cost.... gs

I just picked up a box of Remington "High Velocity" 270 gr. SP ammo to try out in the new Mod 70 before loading my own. (It's the cheapest I found.) Since I received the Shooting Chrony the night before, I decided to try it out at the same time. We fired two rounds across the chrono into the old tree. Here's the results: #1: 2701 fps (Let me see if I can calculate the AV and SD in my head...) According to the Hodgdon manual, these are right at Max. Rick.
