I just got my first double rifle and need to upgrade my cleaning supplies for it. I do have boresnakes for some of my guns. Is that a good idea for a .470 NE as well? If so, where's the best place to get one? I checked Cabela's and didn't see one listed for bores of this size. Any other tips for the gun's ongoing maintenance? And since my gun is a sidelock, should I ever do anything in particular internally for its longevity?

Spring, I use a .458" bore snake in .470 Capstick. With a good quality patch, it works fine. George

Unless you have detachable sidelocks it is best to leave them alone. You can have a 'Competent' gunsmith clean and lube the locks but that is a very rare job. Make sure that the pin and the lugs are lightly lubricated at all times and you wipe off the fingerprints from admirers. A little stock wax is a good thing and if it is case coloured than some case colouring sealant or varnish will keep the colours from wearing off. Birchwood Casey has both. I use a pull through all the time and only when or if it Lead or Copper fowls is a good scrubbing needed. Don't get Anal about cleaning it or any rifle.

Yes, Mickey, the sidelocks are detachable, which is a new thing for me. I didn't know if I should periodically lube them a bit with some gun oil or silicone spray. The gun is case colored, so I'll see if I can find some sealant as you suggested. How easily does case coloring wear off?

The colours are only on the surface so can wear from handling, also from oxidation. The locks do not need much oil, maybe every 100 rounds or so. Over oiling is as bad as not enough. Moderation.
