Frankly I cannot think of anything useful that can be done with a French rifle, so making it into a 45-70 is probably one of the better options.
12 April 2005, 07:43
tiggertateDoes anyone know if the Gibbs Rifle Company's Enfield 45-70 conversions ended up worth a damn?

RobgunbuilderZe French Rifle is never to be fired! It simply must be dropped as part of the French ART of Surrender! Firing an American cartridge in one is a sure path to disaster.-Rob

deciple-of-keithIf I ever choose to take up russin ruolet! It will be with one of those babies ! Above the entrance to the French Foreign legion's recruiting centre is the slogan "abandon hope ye who enter here"(cause they used to use mas 36s)

GonHuntinI always wondered why the MAS 36 doesn't have a safety......then it hit me......you don't need to load a rifle to surrender and you don't need a safety if the rifle isn't loaded!
14 April 2005, 03:07
RobgunbuilderThe French are very practical people. Ze weopon is only for show! When in danger drop it, run like hell and above all CAPITULATE! you can always deceide which side is winning later and side with them. Perhaps they will ever re-arm you with decent weopons! Zat is ze way it is done in France! Wala!-Rob

NitroXWas the French military round rimmed or rimless? ie the one the MAS36 was originally chambered for.
Does the MAS36 have a detachable magazine?
Keith
Those Siamese Mausers were once common but I haven't seen one for ages. They used to be $100 but like many a dill never bought one. Seen any recently?

Scota4570Might be an interesting project. Convert to 45-70. Fix that stupid bolt handle. Move the trigger back where it belongs. Put a receiver sight on it. Make a decent looking butstock. Make a forend like a Savage '99. Might not be all together horrible.
14 April 2005, 20:54
Tex21If anyone has a copy of "Bolt Action Rifles" by de Hass and van Zwoll, you might read up on the MAS and see what's said about them. From what I read, it didn't look there was too terribly much you could do with one.
The only MAS I've ever been near hangs over my barber's front door. Occassionally, when the weather is nice, he'll take it down and use it prop the door open... It serves admirably in that position.

Old Elk HunterAnd I thought Siamese Mausers were common. I bought one cheap and have passed on two complete rifles in the last three months. I was planning on barreling mine for 444 Marlin just for grins. If someone really wants one I can scour the gunshows and post the results here. May take a few months, but what the heck, I go to the shows anyway.

Unfortainatly OEH. our selection of dealersof the finer things in life (firearms)Is some what limited in Auz it would seem that 2 buy backs from the Gov to rid Auz of illegal firearms by buying & bannig certain types of rife& Handguns.Has enticed, many dealers to take the money the Gov offered &run!Strange thing is that firearm offences are still being commited with illegal firearms
