I used one built by a gunsmith friend who uses it to regulate double rifles. It is a three legged affair with wheels on the base so it can be moved around like a two wheeler. He built it with a tilted triangular bench top at about the same angle as a podium. When you stand behind it, it looks like an arrow pointing down range. On the arrow point, he mounted an adjustable rest for a sandbag to rest his hand on. It was very inexpensive, being only a few 2x4s and some small plywood pieces, but it did allow you to shoot many shots without fatigue. Your upper body just rolls with the punches.

I sure like the idea of a standing rest. My shooting van has a built-in benchrest inside the rear doors, and for most rifles it works fabulously well. However, the sheer concussion from 100 or more grains of powder when shooting my .416 Rigby from inside is fearsome, and the recoil from a sitting rest ain't too sweet either! I'd like to rig some sort of dismountable standing rest on the rear doors, so I can stand beside the rear wheel and have a good support for the rifle. Planning is underway. To see the van at a fairly-early stage of development, go to Special Projects at: www.castpics.net This van is the BEST shooting "toy" I've ever owned! If one can find a cheap old van, it's a highly recommended conversion. I don't have much over one thousand bucks in the entire rig. I built a chronograph boom that is adjustable for direction from the shooting stool too, which is very convenient. The spotting scope now is mounted on a bar which crosses the van above the bench, so it doesn't take up any bench space. Yep, I need a standing-type rest.

For sighting in my 416 I use sand bags over my shoulder so the butt of the rifle is against the bag before my shoulder. Some times the rifle jumps up off the sand bags that I use to rest my rifle on when fireing if I'm not fully supporting the rifle. To get the full recoil of it witch rocks you I shoot standing. This way works for me.
