Just wondering what your opinions were on this round. Thinking of one in a Lefty M70. I had the opportunity to fire a wildcat in 416 built on this round, fun to shoot! not nearly as bad as I, umm..........feared! . Thanks in advance! Huntr

Billy, mexican mausers are PERFECT for the steyr.. 3.1ish oal, with zero work.. open the bolt face to ~.505 to .510, and slightly polish the ramp. anything for a 308 or 3006 will work great... a model 70 would be fantastic 4 down barely jeffe

I keep using my Steyr ProHunter .376 as well, and it just kills them dead. The factory Hornady bullets are on the soft side, so I suggest loading up something with better terminal performance for dangerous game. North Forks are my current recommendation for after market bullets by the way. Steyr considered doing a .416 on the .376 cartridge case, but they thought the velocities that it would deliver with a 400 grain bullet would not be sexy enough to sell in the US. Of course if you drop bullet weight a bit with something like the North Fork 370 grain bullet, it will work fine. Just don't tell the animal the velocity numbers! I kept telling the factory they should advertise the .376 Steyr as a modernized 9.3X62 -- it would help sales. If they asked me again, I would change that to call it the .376 Steyr Short Magnum (SSM). jim

Jeffe, So a VZ24 with blackburn bottom metal would get me 5 down I take it. Maybe not necessary, but drop boxs are cool.

I have always thought it a very interresting well thought out caliber and I would like to have one someday, but I have a 9.3x62 and a 375 H&H that I won't part with I don't think and it would be a repeat of them from a practical standpoint..but someday it will come about in a weak moment, simply because I have not shot anything with one and I cannot handle that, I love that part of hunting, that is to use every caliber imaginable for hunting, the experimenting is half the fun, and always an education....

Dave, Jeffe, etc., You guys are doing EXACTLY what I have in mind!! Necking this cartridge down to either .338, or, .308 would be about perfect!! Where are you getting dies, reamers, etc.?? Is there any reloading data out there yet? Thanks in advance!! Huntr

Got my Pro Hunter on closeout from CDNN Investments for $449.99. Had 200 rounds of factory ammo, 400 virgin cases, a set of dies and a cheeseburger for well under $700.00. With a Leupold 1.5-5x20 the little bastard is unreal. If I wasn't such a gun slut I could do everything except ground squirrels with it. That 416 version (416 Aagaard) would be pretty cool. Maybe use 350 grain A-Frames. Ain't life grand? JCN

Jim, What velocity did Steyr get with a 400 grain bullet in the "416 Steyr"?

I can answer that. They used Speer 400-grain AGS bullets in their test, and the best velocity they achieved with safe pressures was just shy of 2100 fps. I think a 350-grain bullet is the better match for this case and probably could get you up to 2250 fps, which should do all you need to do.

TM, 75 bucks for HOW many turks? I bought 5 for 100, barreled actions, about 2 years ago... and, for turks, decent. 79 bucks is a vz price... I think it got that from SOG or sarco the other day. I know that's century's price.. sure, though, a turk would work.. and be a COOL remingturk for a refitted takeoff 375 barrel jeffe

Hey Jeffe, what about the Yugo 48? it too is a bastard length action, something like 3.3" magazine - and the actions are plentiful and cheap(Sarco has actions for $75USD!) Plus, Boyd's makes a JRS stock for it in both Laminate and Walnut.. I'd like to do one in .375 and .416, both with short(21") barrels and setup like a safari gun. Toolmaker
