Folks I'd like to know if one had a .416 barrel wit ha 1-8" twist would you be able to shoot 340gr and 400 gr pills along with the new Hornady 450gr BTHP ?

What .416 bullets couldn't you shoot with this barrel ?

I put a 1 in 10 in mine and should be able to shoot the heavey stuff. 1 in 8 on a 416 is really fast.

Thank you it's the barrel on hand so I'm wondering what it will and won't work with. Originally it was to build a .416/458 socom using only the 450 bthp Hornsby but am wondering about a .416 WSM as it might be more versatile as it could get meaningful speeds with a 400 gr hunting pill and still shoot sub loads with the 450 bthp hornady.

My 1 in 10 shoots most load to the same point of aim have not tryed any thing heavier then 400s.

I was hopeing to get a 450gr mold and shoot them about a thousand.

I finsd fast twists do not effect the accuracey of the lighter bullets.

If going sub's as fast as you can get, super sonic 1-10 to 1-12 should be good.

OK so will a 1-8" twist .416 Barrel shoot woodleigh 340gr, 410gr and 450 gr projectiles at 2300 fps + ?

PC:

Should be perfect for VLD/BTHP looooong 450-grainers at 2300.
Those bullets work in the .416 Barrett at 3250 fps in a 1:12" twist.
To get the same spin rate on the 450-grain bullet at 2300 fps would require a 8.492" twist, about 1:8.5"
Your 8" twist makes it with a half-inch of twist to spare.
1:9" would be too slow.

All the shorter, lighter bullets will shoot well, out to 500 yards.
Use the 450-grainer for 1000 yards.

Solid bullets will penetrate better with your 1:8" twist, as the faster twist aids the transition from air to inside the critter.

Great idea, yours. tu2

Ordinary sporters, not meant for 450-grain VLD bullets: I would not build a .416 of any sort with a twist slower than 1:12".
