| Depends. If it's a Win or Eddystone you'll have to machine a piece to fit in the hole. If it's a Rem you won't have to do that. Either way it's then up to you as to contour. Most of my modified 1917's are rounded to accept Weaver bases although I'd have to take a look as to number as I don't remember exactly although I want to say Remington. I would rather have had some squared contour but it wasn't up to me at the time really. |

| the best approach is to have it surface ground before you do anything else, then its square to the world for mounting scope bases, double or single square bridges..
New bolt handle, stright down to keep it off the trigger finger in a big bore..I like the Enfield Safty but a M-70 3 pos. is optional and a good trigger like a Blackburn that sits back in the trigger guard..A drop magazine from Blackburn and cock on the opening should about fix it up for a good barrel.... |

| Ray is spot on about the straight down bolt handle! After having fired my 500 Jeffrey before removing the dogleg, and I can attest to the necessity of doing so. |

| Jeff,
When that stock was on my previous 458 Lott, I'd never had the bolt wack my finger, though it did draw blood by opening up a cut on the buddy that ended up buying the rifle. Most people when a gun makes them bleed don't care to fire it again, he ended up buying it.
I think it is a stock issue, but the straight bolt is good preventative maintenance. Now if I can just find some time to make a decent stock, I'll get around to shooting it! |

| Reed, I remember a while back hearing about some kind of jig that you can attach the action to and grind off the ears, do you know about such a jig? By the way my action is a Remington, no hole. |

| Bigbull,
Sorry, not aware of anything but I'm also not in the category of some folks here so hopefully you'll get your answer. Ray's suggestion for surface grinding might be along the lines of what you're asking if you have the equipment.
If you do enough searching here you'll find pictures of a really high quality 1917 based rifle that I seem to recall being double square bridge...pretty cool.
