I think there is every chance I will get a Ruger 1 in 375. Has anyone tried one or the other Tropical models with the big barrels.

The strange thing is that many people mention the advantge of no feeding problesm and not having to worry about overall cartridge lenght.

Yet we could still load a caliber too long and use a bolt rifle single shot.

Perhaps as a group we are happy with a single shot rifle but not a repeater that has to be used as a single shot because of the ammo loaded.

Mike, I have recently aquired a #1 in .458 Win Mag. The only complaint that I have from my limited experience is the factory recoil pad leaves alot to be desired. A Pachmayer Decallarater is definately going to be installed before I do much more shooting. On the plus side, it is one of the best handling large caliber rifles that I have ever held. You won't regret buying one. Thanks, Tom

My friend had a No 1 in 45-70. He is not a handloader so was using factory rounds which as you know are very lightly loaded. He said it was unplesant to shoot due to the design of the stock.

This surprised me because his recoil tolerance is much higher than mine & often when we go to the range together I get him to shoot my Sako .375 H&H for load development.

So when I told him I was interested to add a single shot to my battery, he cautioned going past a 7mm Rem in Ruger 1.

What was the controversy on the Hunt America site. Didn't get what it was all about.

How did you go with the 220gn Hornady loads. I am particularly interested in the reduced load that are accurate with any bullet weight in .375. Bought some AR2205 to try after your email but have not tried it yet.

I ahd a 458 No 1 but only for a bout a week a few years ago. It licked real hard, and think the very heavy barrel contributed becuase it held the rifle down and it came back like a pile driver.

Might get to the range tomorrow or weekend. Will try higher loads of 2205. Also 2207 with the 220 seated out beyond the cannelure.

Unfortunately, while 2205, 2207 etc have buring rates almnost identical to IMR 4227 and IMR 4198 the same loads do not always work for accuracy.

I expect 2205 will end being accurate up to about 2200 to 2300 f/s.

On HA I sometimes throw some crackers in the fire Guaranteed to bring the little old ladies into complain. I hjave been banned there a few times. The bans usually last about an hour or so. Sometimes I just can't help myself

Mike375...I always attributed anything stange you said to the fact that you live upside down and the blood rushes to your head but now I see it's done on purpose for a purpose.

To give you a straight answer, yes I had one for 10 years and am sorry I ever sold it. The "recoil" pad doesn't do much good, but the rifle fit me so well that recoil was not a problem. I used loads ranging from 220 grain flat points at 2,000 fps to 300 grain solids at 2,550 fps, and it shot about 1-1/2 inch 3 shot groups with all (though not to the same point of aim). The ideal scope for me was a 2 X 7 variable in the Ruger rings.

As to loading, with practice, you can reload almost as fast as with a bolt rifle by using a cartridge carrier on the rifle stock.

I used the rifle on several deer and elk with complete satisfaction. It handles great and the balance is as close to perfect as I have found for me. To sum this up, I will own another.

I shoot a Ruger #1 Tropical in .458 Lott.
A fantastic rifle, one of my most loved. Only change was the recoil pad to a Pachmayer Triple Mag. Accuracy is better than the standard models because the barrel is so heavy, resulting in a different vibration pattern.

I have owned four of the Ruger No. 1's. I traded off the .338 Win. and the .458 Win., but have retained a .416 Rigby and converted the other .416 Rigby to .510 JAB.

The .416 Rigby is marvelously accurate in the No. 1. So is the .510 JAB. I doubt that I will ever get rid of another No. 1.
