I have read alot of posts about the CZ magnum rifles with the hump type stocks craking with the 458 Lott. I spoke with someone the other day that had the CZ american safari in 458 Lott which doesn't have the hump cracked on his 12th shot.I don't understand why they cant fix this problem by now if they are getting complaints about it. I see that they do offer the Lott with a laminated stock and was wondering if this could happen still . What are your thoughts about laminated stocks. Thanks Tanoose

Tanoose, My PH in Botswana carried a CZ 550 Magnum in .416 Rigby. It was one that had a straight stock with a lot of drop, as if the hump had been planed off a Lux stock. It was an unmodified factory stock, and it did not have the crossbolt through the wrist like the Lux/Hogback does. That is a third variant factory stock, the other two being the Lux and the American, that I am aware of for the CZ 550 Magnum. Anyway this young PH had popped a divot of wood out of his stock right behind the tang. He could remove this plug of wood, about like a small cork, and replace it easily, to show me this amazing damage. He had not undertaken to repair it yet. I guess he was just hoping not to have to shoot until he could get it to a smith, or did not have the materials or tools to fix it himself in the middle of the Okavango. Luckily my buffalo and red lechwe did not require backup. I would hate to have been the cause for him having to shoot and possibly break his stock in two at the grip. He was a polo player PH whose daddy ran another safari outfit in the Tuli Block. He was not a gunnut who doted over guns. To him it was just a loose handle on his hammer. DO NOT THINK that the cheap laminates will be any better than good walnut for split resistance!!! NO WAY!!! Laminates should be glass and pillar bedded, crossbolted and properly relieved at the tang for a heavy recoiling rifle to stand up.

All unglassed, non crossbolted 458 Lotts split the stock sooner or later, mostly sooner...Even perfectly inletted custom rifles will eventually split out as the Lott will eventually pound a gap on the recoil lug and splitsville..... Ray, A stockmaker in Australia called Ross Waghorn said that a 500 Jeffery in good Australian Engish would be fine and with no glass bedding and no lug on the barrel. That was also on a Mauser with the little recoil lug they have and not much stock material behind the small lug. Mike

You may want to bed it just for peace of mind. The RSM's usually have very good triggers and that's something you won't have to worry about. Lo do they call to me, They bid me take my place among them in the Halls of Valhalla, Where the brave may live forever.
