I finally became brainwashed (did not take much!) after reading so much about bigbores on this site that I had to have one so I have ordered a Winchester Safari 416 Rem Mag (Model 70).

Thought long and hard about this versus the 416 Rigby and I hope I made the right decision. Am getting brass and dies from Grafs and was pleasantly surprised with the cost after checking out the price of rigby brass.

Can`t help thinking that the best of the 416s is the Dakota 416 based on the 404 Jeffrey case which IMO is one of the best cases around.

Whats the general opinion about the 416 rem - I know that in Africa there have been reports of sticky cases with hot factory loads. I will be loading the 410 grain soft nose with ADI 2208 (max 77 grains).

Also any advice on the Model 70 would be appreciated.

You've picked a good cartridge that will do it all. If you don't want the sticky brass don't try to push for all the velocity that the cartridge is capable of and load with a temperature stable powder. You can look forward to some real good fun with your big bore.

I recently bought a winchester 70 in .416 rem. and just love it. So far I have fired about 70 rounds of ammo thru mine, and it has performed great. It shoots 300 grain barns x bullets all the way to 400 grain round nose's with excellent accuracy(using Reloader 15). I am in the process of glass bedding it, so it has been out of action for a few weeks. I did have to buy a front ramp that wasn't as tall as the one winchester supplied other that that it has been awasome.

Ring rebel gun works in QLD and get some Taipan 400 gr .416 bullets there great on thin skinned stuff, and $14 per 25

I have been using a Mauser in 416 Rem for a number of years and if someone is having sticky extraction problems its because they have yet to learn how to reload and the loads they are using are simply too hot for their gun...I get an easy 2400 with any 400 gr. bullet and 2350 with a 450 gr. Woodleigh and never a problem...I see more 416 Rem in camp these days than any other caliber....

I believe Man Magnum started that crap about the 416 based on someones complaint, and its balony or human error, otherwise the 270, 280, 7 mag, 30-06, and 375 and a host of others would be likewise guilty of this problem as they are all loaded to the same pressure levels for the most part.....

Dave & Ray - I sort of guessed the 416Rem Mag is like any other cartridge - I always load conservatively so I do not expect any hassles with case extractions. Its interesting Ray that you are seeing more of the 416 Rem Mags around.

Leadmover - I will wait and see what the open sights do for me but will have them changed if necessary. I do expect to have the stock glass bedded as I believe the bedding done at the facory is very avereage. Great to hear yours shoots well!

PC - many thanks for the tip on the Taipan projectiles. I had no idea they made any that big but will pick some up next week.

in the Rigby I use the 400 gr Taipans and the 410 gr woodleigh's thye both shoot pretty well to same POI.

What part of the country are you in ??

I wish Taipan would make a 500 gr .458 bullet !!

Love the round... feeds great, can get factory published ballistics, and is cheap to feed.

reloader 15, win 760 have been my favorites, with hornady 400 sp's (blem's are CHEAP) to play with.

you'll be surprised at how accurate big bores are...

first couple shots should be taken offhand, iron sights.

btw, this is the same gun model/caliber that gave me a "Y" scope CUTS!! (twice in 10 days).... So becareful on scope eye relief

I too love the 416 Rem, and ahve loaded for a ruger #1 tropical and Rem APR for 8 years. MY secret with the 400 grainers is to use H4350 or AA4350 slightly compressed loads. These yeil 2450 fps at 45,000 CUP and never an extraction problem. R15 for everything else.

Thanks for the warning about the Weatherby eyebrow - I shall be careful. At this stage I have a Leeupold 1-4x20 Vari 11 which I bought some time ago for a rifle such as this. Hopefully it will have sufficient eye relief.

Secondly, what sort of scope mounts do you have on yours? I favour Leuopold`s but will wait and see. I am a little uncertain about QR mounts.

Since I am more or less 1/2 scottish and 1/2 prussian, I am torn between calling them beauty marks (the lasses and lambs might like that) or Dueling scars, in the noble german tradition of the master marking the student when he's become a master himself....

My 416 has the 1x4x20 and its about perfect for me, I actually like it better than my 1.5x5s...Plenty of eye releif and I have never needed more scope than 4 for any big game hunting....Always good advise when hunting hot climes to not have compaction so I use 79 grs. of RL-15 and recommend the 400 gr. Nosler and the Bridger flatnose solids for hunting dagga boys and the 385 gr. Northforks or 450 gr. Woodleigh RN for the herd hunts...You cannot go wrong with these bullets....All are great.
