It's true...JTG is officially OFF the market!

For a while now my girlfriend Julie and I have been talking about upgrading our status to "engaged" and the final step is now complete. Here is a picture of us taken in Alexandria.

Since this is a "big bore" forum, I guess I need to reveal the "big bore" component of our engagement. When we were talking about getting engaged last year (my first in Cairo and without her) she didn't think it was fair for me to spend the money on a ring for her and wear only a gold band myself. So, since she got her ring a few months ago, she was kind enough to purchase for me an "engagement rifle". Yes, it's a big bore...a Jim Gefroh manufactured 8-bore percussion Jaeger style front stuffer with our names and date inscribed on the sideplate opposite the lock. I got the photos yesterday of my completed rifle from Jim so I guess it's really official now. What's maybe just as exciting is that Julie and I are taking it to the Yukon this January. Hopefully a Wood Bison will be taken with the rifle and then after the hunt the future wife and I are going house shopping in The Territory.

Needless to say....LIFE IS GOOD !!!

Best,

John

Congratulations John!

And what a beautiful rifle. Can you tell us the ballistics? What shape is the bullet, and is it hardened in any particular way? Is it paper patched or is there some special lube?

Whoa, dude! Thank God you have the sense to marry this woman! Wish you both happiness and that more than husband and wife, you are always each other's best friend.

P.S. Gefroh does nice work, doesn't he?

JTG,
Congratulations. You are a handsome couple, but she adds more to that for sure. thumb

Well done. Glad to see the old, time-honored Kentucky tradition of "Engagement Rifle" is alive and well. This happens in Kentucky whenever the father of the bride does not use an "Engagement Shotgun," instead he helps his daughter buy the groom-to-be a fine squirrel rifle.

You have a fine squirrel rifle there! thumb

Going house hunting in the Yukon after the bison hunt? Very interesting proposition there too. thumb

Let me add my congratulations as well JTG. Your bride to be is very pretty. Now, having said all that, let's not get sidetracked from our project which was to import some doubles and save ourselves a bunch of money. Stay focussed!

OK John, firstly congratulations.

But knowing the going rate for a wife in Egypt is 100 camels, I offer you, 105 camels, 20 goats, and 4 asses. But the rifle comes too. A package deal.

You be a rich man in Cairo and much admired with many camel amd asses.

Good luck, a pretty girl. thumb

And she buys a nice rifle too. Lucky man. thumb thumb

Canuck,
I have driven through Whitehorse, Yukon 6 different trips up and down the Alcan Highway.

I was amused to see a Colonel Sander's Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise joint, packed with natives, first time through Whitehorse in 1985.

Is The Colonel still clogging arteries there?

And what was the name of that downtown Whitehorse sporting goods store that had the first BRNO ZKK 602's that I ever saw, in 1985?

Thanks so much to all those who have replied to this thread. Rest assured, I truly DO know how lucky I am! Not many women would tolerate me but Julie does that and more.

As for the rifle....the standing sight is regulated for an 830 grain .820 diameter patched round ball cast from wheel weights and the folding leaf for a 1360 grain conical pushed by 10 drams (273 grains) of 2F. Ballistically, H&H used very slightly larger diameter 892 grain pure lead round balls from a 26" bbl and got 1654 f/s yielding 5232 f/# of energy. Using a 1257 grain conical they got 1500 f/s and 6273 f/#.

Be prepared gentlemen...Julie HAS A SISTER! Jenna is a 21 year old 6'1" brunette strongly resembling Angelina Jolie. The REALLY bad news is that she's A VEGAN! Big Grin She and I have come to an agreement however...she doesn't give me a hard time about hunting and I don't somehow trick her into eating meat at holiday functions. Big Grin

December/January will see Julie and I in the Yukon and hopefully buying a place up there. We will only be using it during the summers for now but I wouldn't mind an early retirement in the great white North. Residency is the only way I will ever be able to swing any sheep hunts in my life after all! Smiler While she doesn't hunt (yet), Julie definitely recognizes its significance to me so I am thankful for that.
