Any thoughts on this gun? My boss is looking at buying a rifle, and one of these are for sale for $800 Australian. That includes spare stock, scope (tasco),dies and about 100 projectiles. What are the Rugers like? Bakes

Bakes, Price sounds pretty good! I personally find the Ruger 458s to be too barrel heavy for me, balance aand feel is all wrong. Cheers... Con

Since it's a 458 WinMag, it's an older rifle with the tang safety. I bought one used about two years ago and use it as a plinking gun. The recoil on it is so soft that shooting it on the bench with proper elevated body positioning, I can shoot as much as 60 rounds when sighting in & familiarizing myself with it. I've whacked numerous ground squirrels and a couple of feral dogs with it. Obviously it will blow a big hole in anything. With factory loads, I averaged 1 3/4" 5-shot groups. With GC hardcast lead bullet, 2"-2 3/4". All at 100 yds.

Bakes-Sounds like great price, with all extras. My test rifle for the 458HE is a Ruger 77 that I rechambered from 458Win...Has 500 458 Win and 1900 458HE rounds though it.Tough and strong. Con--They are barrel heavy from factory,That is good, as you put 2.2 lbs of lead shot and epoxy in the butt ,and it points perfect, and kicks a third less.Or two recoil reducers. And best of all can be redone to Lott, if more HP is wanted!!!Ed.

Thanks guys. I've told the boss that it'll kick a bit but we can down load to 45/70 level until he gets used to it. Bakes
