Hoping to get some opinions hear . I plan on purchasing very soon a bolt action in 375 H&H proibly a CZ or Winchester, haven't chosen yet. I was planning on buying a new Leupold ,a 1.75x6x32 But recently i removed a Leupold 1.5x5x20 from my BLR and was thinking on using this scope on the new 375 and was hoping for some opinions on this. Thanks Tanoose

Either one you mentioned would be fine, but I chose to put a 2.5-8x36 Leupold on mine and have been very happy with it. While there is certainly nothing wrong with the lower powered scopes, I feel that the .375 offers more versatility than most big bores and wanted a scope that could take advantage of that.

I suppose it depends on how you feel about the max power setting. I would be comfortable with 6X on a .375. I guess if I knew my hunt would include springbok in the Kalahari I might opt for an 8X if I didn't feel comfortable on long shots with anything less.

I have done one safari in South Africa with a 1.5-5 X 20mm on my .375 H&H and had no problems but the longest shot was probably 170 yards.

Been twice with a 1.5-5x Leupold on mine; I don't think it ever came off 1.5x.

I've always used a 2.5x-8x 36mm scope on my .375s and found it to be a perfect choice for my African hunting.

It offers a wide field of view at 2.5x and 8x on the high end comes in handy on long shots across a vlei.

Both of my 375s have 2.5 x 8 Leupolds. I shot a Zebra at 241 yards in Namibia and glad I had the extra power. I also shot a Leopard at 35 yards in the dark. A very versatile scope. The rest of my big bores have 1.5 to 5 Leupolds.

I've run 1.5-5x20 Leupolds, 1.8-5.5x38 Zeiss Conquest, and 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquests. My 2.5-8 Leupy lives on a 9,3x62.

The 1.5-5x20 Leupold will hold up fine ... I've used mine on a .416 Rigby and a .458 AR as well. It doesn't gather as much light as the 2.6-8 Luepy or either of the Zeiss Conquests. If you're going for Leopard this may be an issue.

If you don't mind the weight, the 1.8-5.5 Zeiss Conquest is a wonderful scope and is available cheap ($350) from CameralandNY. Works GREAT as dusk and dawn.

Mine started out with a 2.5-8 Leupold, which I pulled to put on my predator calling rifle. The .375 now wears a 2.5-8 Zeiss Conquest. The scope worked great for me in Namibia. The longest shot of that hunt was on my Gemsbok at between 375 and 400 yards.

Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

I have used Leup 1.5-5 scopes on my bigger bores for years (375, 416 and 458Lott) and they have proved to be as "recoil proof" as possible for a variable. My RSM Lott with its 1.5-5 has seen north of 400 rounds and doesn't seem troubled.

My issue with the Leup 1.5-5 is its "light gathering" with its 20mm objective. I have poor eyes, and this scope just doesn't do it for me in less than bright conditions. The Leup 2.5-8 36 scope on my Lapua gives me a better "picture"/ more resolution of the game.

The bad news is that on some magnum actions some scopes won't work without extended rings. I plan on trying out some extened ringgs on my Rigby and Lott. My RSMs will be outfitted with extended rings and a 2.5-8 scope for my NA game and varmints.

Again, my eyesight is an issue. If you have good eyes the Leup 1.5-5 is an excellant scope. Just know that a bigger objective scope may help you out in less than bright conditions.

I have the 2.5-8 Leupold on mine to take advantage of the trajectory.

In the picture below, I'm standing next to my downed zebra and the white dot in the middle is the truck driving right by the tree I shot from.

Neither scope is a bad choice,
But I think the main difference would be the light gathering.
I have a couple 2.5X8s VX3s and they are excelent,as is my Ziess conquest in the same power range.
I think for most american hunting, I would go with the 1.75X6.
The 1.5X5 simply does not gather as much light.
As I understand it, in africa the sun comes up rather sudenly. Little twighlight shooting.
The main advantahe in the 1.75X6 over the 2.5X8 is just a little more length between the bells.
A longer tube for scope mounting.

I've been all over the map with this over the years, now, the most powerful scope I use for anything is the 2.5-8, and I doubt I have taken a shot with it set above 4. I limit myself to 200, I have made two mistakes estimating range, both in Namibia where Gemsbok and Kudu were closer to 300, still connected with the 1.5-5x leupold on my 375hh set on 4. They were good, old, bulls, no way to get closer, PH felt I could make the shot, more scope power would not have helped shooting off sticks. Very high powers, above 6x, unless you are in a "Texas Tower" with what amounts to a benchrest, are detrimental to good shooting, at least for me.

My opinion, stick with the 1.75-6x.

I like the 1.5x5 Leupold, never felt the need for more power unless I was hunting rockchucks.
I can get a very good sight picture on a Impala even at 1000 yards with a 4 or 5X scope. Making the image bigger gains little or nothing IMO as all you need is to be able to put the cross hair on the shoulder or above it and even a 2.5X will do that. Guess thats why my other favorite DGR scope is the fixed 3X....but whatever one is comfortable with is the best way to pick your scope.

I have the 1.5-5x20 on my Mod 70. Used it in Canada at -20F and Africa at +110. Longest shot was a Nyassa wildebeest at 300 at 5x.

I've put at least 1100 rounds at max load under it. Great scope.

Only thing I won't use it for is SC whitetail beanfield hunting where the deer almost always walk at late dusk or early dawn.

Mine has a 2-7X Kahles currently but I've also used the Leupold 1.75-6x and various 3-9x scopes. Anything in those ranges had worked well for me. Personally, I like the option of more magnification than a 4x or 5x can deliver. Also, the adjustment range of the VX-III 1.75-6x is less than a lot of their other scopes and for that reason I had to shim my bases when I had it on a .375 Safari Express.

I like the 1.75x6 idea, I have a conquest 1.8x5 and love it on my 375, my 9.3x62 has a swaro Z6 1x6 and I like that too.

I put a 2.5x10 nightforce on the 378, funky rectical but I like the up to 10x for the 378's ranging ability.

I use a leupold VX-III 3.5-10X40mm on my M70 in 375H&H.
At the lowest power setting of 3.5 (3.3 actual according to leupold) I get 4.6" of eye relief and use it like a fixed power scope for hunting.
At the range I can crank it up to the 10 power max and actually see the bullet holes at 100m.
Although at max power I loose an inch of eye relief I shoot off a lead sled so my brow and shoulder are well protected.

Have some Leupold's for my .375 H&H - just lately bought a pair of Swarovski’s Z6 - 1.7-10x42 & Z6 - 2-12x50 - great scopes for close encounters and long range - The .375 H&H is versatile the Swaro's are probably the best choice.

I tried to mount a Leu 2.5 - 8 on my Montana action .375 with Talley QDs. There was a problem with insufficient ring spacing as I didn't want to use a large offset base. I used a 1/4" offset base and a Leu 1.75 - 6. The 1.5 - 5 would also have worked nicely.

My model 70 .375 wears a Kahles American Hunter in 2x7, and so far, no issues. I'll probably get a Leupold illuminated at some time and keep the Kahles as a backup, at least that's my plan.

I have in all my 375 H & H Leupold’s 2.5–8 X 36 scopes. In its lowest power they are focus from 5 steps on. I also have Leupold’s Quick Release mounts and rings on them since I always carry a 1.5-5 X 20 spare scope in my safaris already sighted. Remember the weakest part and more prone to be broken is your scope’s glass.
