Was looking and some case dimensions this evening and it seems like it would be pretty easy to ream out a 458win to a 458accrel. I have a barreled action in win mag that I want to switch to a standard 98 bolt and am mulling over the idea of going up to the accrel to compensate for the more than likely change in head space. Am I missing anything?

Jeffeosso is the expert but I will try to help out.
The .458 AccRel will certainly clean up a .458 Win. Mag. chamber. The AccRel case is longer (2.550") and the COAL is longer (3.350").
This means your feed rails, magazine, and follower may all need work.
The AccRel uses Remnigton Ultra Mag brass, and the case head is .550" compared to the .458 Win mag.'s .532"; your bolt face might need opening up or your extractor might need a bit of work.
What exactly do you mean by 'switch to a standard 98 bolt'? Both cartridges are considered magnums, not standard cartridges.

What I meant by standard was not a mark x speed lock bolt. I know both cartridges are magnums. I thought ultra mag had a rebated rim making it a standard .532 bolt face?

Joe21,
I believe the issue is that references to "standard bolt face" relates to the traditional .473 bolt face (relating to the 30-06, 7mm, 8mm, etc.) whereas the .532 dimension is commonly referred to as a magnum rim necessitating a "magnum bolt face".
And the "standard M98 bolt face" would correctly reference the "traditional .473 bolt face" if one goes by the shear volume of commercial and military M98 production...

Rechambering the .458 Win to 458 AccRel is easy. Same bolt face, feed rails may need some widening. Just get the reamer from Jeffeosso. He had dies too. I love my 458Accrel.

I don't know if it could be reamed by hand. Are you thinking of leaving the barrel on the action? I imagine getting the reamer through the action would be tough. I did mine on a lathe with the barrel off the action. Someone with more experience needs to answer you.

I would if I could. I'm not opposed to using a lathe but it would delay the project a bit. I'm on the hunt for some decent machinery but down here in fl the prices seem inflated. A ragged out Bridgeport will sell for over a grand here, and people want a thousand dollars or more for a working atlas and the majority I've seen didn't even come with any tooling or thread cutting gears. The action I'm thinking if building on won't ever be a show piece so id kind of like to do something unique on it and just buy a complete win mag on a commercial action and add a few personal touches to it like a 2 or 3 position safety and a new stick and maybe a barrel band and some sights.
