What actions or action lengths are suitable for building a 458 Lott?

I am having my Savage 116 Safari Express 458 Win Mag rechambered to 458 Lott right now. The gunsmith has it all finished except for test firing ( he had to wait for ammo). I can't wait to try it out!

Hi Craig,
Most any 375 length action would work but the Bruno 602 or CZ550 action would work really well. If you used a CZ550 action chambered for 458 Winchester you could just have it rechambered to the Lott or 450 Ackley without much else. I did a 450 Ackley on a 602 and changed the feed ramp a slight bit and that was all that was required. The Bruno will hold five down under and one in the chamber for six. You will get good velocities with the 25 inch barrel that comes with express sights. All that and Control Round Feed.
Good luck with your project,

If you haven't seen it yet, there is a good article on rechambering to Lott at www.african-hunter.com.

Literally anything in a 458 win can be easily rechambered to a Lott/watt/Ackley with minimum fuss. Personally I love pre-64 Winchester LA's. Nothing feeds and extracts as smootly as these and they screem African dangerous Game Rifle! As 470 MBOGO said a CZ550 is also darn hard to beat!-Rob

Craig, as 470 Mbogo said, the CZ 550 in 458 Win just has to be about the best for dollars and effort in at one end and results out the other end [Smile]

Model 70 in 375. Model 70s in calibers like 7mm Rem and 338 Win are OK, but lots more work to be done as compared to M70 in 375.

Rem 700s in 7mm Mag etc are already OK for magazine length.

The easiest and least expensive route is to ream the chamber of a CZ550 or ZKK602 in 458Win. Or if you like single shots, a Ruger #1 458. Low-cost Remington 30's or military Enfields make neat magnum-length big-bore rifles too but require lots of smithing. I haven't had experience with the new magnum M-70's (375 length) but that might be a fairly expedient route too.
