Can somebody in the USA who has a CZ 550 American Safari Magnum tell me if their gun has the Czech proof marks?? It would be most appreciated. Reason for asking: I'm retired US Navy working for the DOD over here in the UK. If I bought a CZ in the states and sent it to myself here, it would be cheaper than buying one locally (crazy, I know!). If the US versions have the Czech proof marks then I would not have to have it proofed once I got it here. Thanks in advance! H. I did not realize that weapons of non-British origin belonging to non-British have to have the weapon reproofed by the Birmingham Proof House rules? Rusty We Band of Brothers! Rusty, I think I've read that rifles imported into the EU have to have been proof tested by an accredited(?) proof house. George

Yes and no... I can bring a gun over (assuming its on my certificate) and as long as it is in my personal use I do not need to have it proofed. If I want to sell, trade, import it to a gunshop or export it, I must have it proofed. There is a scheme in Europe where certain member states proof marks are certified for the others. The UK recognizes Czech proof marks as certified proof on the gun. If the American export versions are marked by CZ, that is good enough. It's not hard to get a gun proofed. You give it to you local gunshop, they send it off, 60 GBP and a week or so later, you get it back all stamped from Birmingham. It's just annoying. Cheers from over here, H. The CZ Safari Classics have made in the U.S.A McGowen barrels (unless they'e changed in the past year or so). So you probably want to stay with the basic models if you want Czech barrels. I have a Czech barrel on mine and it is the worst barrel I've ever had.I might send it to CZ USA and get a McGowwn barrel installed.

Hey Old Salt, My CZ550 American Safari Magnum in .375 H&H has Czech proofs on both the receiver and the barrel right in front of the ejection port. I bought it in '06 before I went on my first trip to SA. I put an S&B 1.5 - 6 Zenith with the German #9 reticle on it and it has the brown laminate stock. Heavy, but balances well enough for me, and I don't mind the weight. It's still a lot lighter than the SMAW I carried in the grunts. And don't worry about the accuracy. My first trip I had good results shooting Federal Premium Cape Shock Ammo. TBBC, TBSS, and TSX's all shot well out of it. I reloaded a bunch of 300 gr. TSX's for my second trip this year, and the critical factor was COAL. The CZ's have a long throat, and with the long TSX bullets, my tightest groups ended up coming from the batch with a COAL of 3.74". I used a Hornady guage to establish a max of 3.799, backed off a few thousandths, and backed down from there. With the max recommended load of 71.5 gr. of H4895, and Federal 215 primers, out of the Federal nickel brass, my CZ achieved .5 moa groups from the prone at 100yds with a Harris bipod. Never made the time to break out my Chrony, but estimated MV to be around 2600 fps or a little better. Just a note of caution here: with the max load, the longest batch started flattening the primers a little bit, so watch your pressure signs. Never had any problems with extraction, but of course, your rifle may be different, so proceed cautiously. The TSX's performed flawlessly, with superb accuracy, and no bullets recovered. I'm sold on them. Good luck, SemperFiHunter REMANUS DURUS CORPS!
