Having trouble getting this 270 grain TSX bullet to shoot out of my 375 ruger. Gun is built on SS Win 70 action and 23 inch SS Shilen barrel and HS stock. Best group so far is with 74 grains Reloader 15. Pathetic 2 1/2 at 100 yds.
any ideas how to get these TSX bullets to shoot?

I just got off the phone with Barnes Technical service / support. They tell me these bullets like to be seated well off the lands. Starting point 50 thousands up to 90 thousands (inch)

Looking for other experience with the Barnes TSX bullets.

I load mine with 74 grains of RL 15 and they shoot 1/2" out of my factory 23" barrel
I seat them to just below the last crimp groove at about 3.335
you might want to check the other rounds in the mag after firing the first.
The TSX's slide back into the case without a crimp. at least they do in my hawkeye

I have found that the middle weight TSX shot best seated just below the groove closest to the ogive. right about even with the edge of the groove.
This is how I seated them in my 300, 338 and 375's and they all shot great at this depth.

, It has been my experience that X bullets and TSX bullets like a good head start before the hit the rifling Most of the time they have a crimp groove noadays . But I used to cut a cannalure in with a ch4d tool before they came out .Sometimes 1/10th of an inch ................. I have generally had good accuracy from all Barnes bullets ... Seems I always have a short mag box and want flawless feeding ....I mostly found that when loaded for function I got good accuracy with X and TSX bullets ..

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

My 375 H&H SAKO likes IMR4350. It puts all its rounds into a 1" hole at 150yds. The bullets are Hornady.

Will2Hunt,

I have had same results as gohip in regards to seating the TSX. Play with the seating depth and you will find your sweet spot.

I have also found that TSX's like to be shot from a clean barrel. I would suggest de-fouling your barrel with the copper cleaner of your choice...then start again w/ the TSX's. It may take 3- 5 rounds of TSX down your "clean" barrel before your rifle settles down.

Don't give up on the TSX...they are great bullets and hammer big game.

Good Luck

You might want to slug your custom Shilen barrel for the groove diameter and compare it to the diameter of the under-sized TSX.

I'll get some of those .375-cal TSX bullets and see if they are .374" or .373".
I may even have to learn to use my +/-.0001"-reading micrometer for this one. Wink

The 50-cal 570-grain TSX is closer to .508" than .510" in the sample I got.
That might shoot accurately when the seating depth is tuned, but I got a lower than expected velocity from the gas blow-by.
Not the best for barrel life.

Seems the TSX may work better in some barrels than others.

If they shoot well regarding accuracy and velocity, they are certainly a good bullet for terminal ballitics.

WOW, someone's been living under a cabbage leaf for the past 21 years! That's how long Barnes has been recommending you seat their solid copper bullets .050" off the rifling, starting way back when with their original X flatbase bullet. FYI, Barnes publishes their loading manual #4 of recommended loading recipes. I'd suggest following it rather than using reloading data from lead core bullet manufacturers, such as Sierra. But, I'd rather be safe than sorry. You can do as you wish. It's a free country.

I just mesured my 375 TSX's and they measure exactly .375 on my calipers. maybe your batch is undersized?

Thanks Gohip2000. I measured my TSX bullets and they seem to be less than .375. Not much smaller in diameter though. Between .374 -.3745
I seem to be cursed with these TSX bullets. I have found the old Barnes X performed better than the TSX bullets in my Win 70,.416 mag. too.

I have always known to back these bullets off by .05 but Barnes says back em off even more 0.1 or more. I have a bunch of test loads to try as soon as the weather breaks.

OK, I shoot at Alamans down in Morristown by Faribault.
I did shoot at the post 435 gun club in Lakeville, but someone last year shot over the berm and they haven't opened the rifle range since. It's a shame because that was a nice range
I tryed the indoor range in Burnsville, but they wouldn't let me shoot because they don't allow and guns with more than 3200 ft/lbs of energy

We have a very nice range in Elk River, even a 600 yd KD range. However a recent incident has temp closed that 600 yd range. Not sure if that will re-open.
