Hello,

I feel pretty dumb as I just noticed this in a rifle I have owned for 2 years. My Rem 700 in 375 does not keep its bolt from opening when the saftey is ON. Is something wrong with the rifle?? I only own one other Rem 700 (it is a 458 wim mag) when you have a round chambered and the saftey is on the bolt won't open just like all other bolt guns that I have.

Is this something that I can fix?? Should I be concerned??

THANKS

You just have a later production M700. They did away with the bolt lock feature sometime in the 80s I think. You can send it back to Remington and have the trigger/safety replaced to lock the bolt if you like.

Remington actually prefers to take your old rifle and remove the bolt lock rather than add a bolt lock. I'm not sure they would do it the other way. It's a stupid product liability thing regarding having to take the gun off safe to unchamber a round.

quote:
If you participate in the Safety Modification Program, your firearm will be cleaned and inspected for proper functioning, by a qualified gunsmith. Once the condition of your firearm has been assessed, you will be notified of one of the following:

•

Your rifle’s trigger assembly is otherwise in good operating condition and the gunsmith will proceed to physically remove the bolt-lock feature so that your rifle can be loaded and unloaded while the safety remains in the “S†or “On Safe†position; or

•

Your rifle’s trigger assembly is found to be in an unsatisfactory or potentially unsafe operating condition because of any number of factors, including wear, alteration or maintenance. The entire trigger assembly will be replaced with a new factory trigger assembly, which does not incorporate a bolt-lock mechanism.

In either case, the total cost to you is $20, shipping and handling.
