Dave: Thanks for your post, and please, please post results of your Swiss trials in your .577 double. Some folks say the Swiss is the equivalent of the old C&H Diamond Grade No. 6.

British data for the 577 BPE. 577 x2 3/4" BPE 160 gr. powder, 520 gr. bullet, 1725 FPS. 577 x2 3/4" BPE 160 gr. powder, 560 gr. bullet, 1650 FPS. 577 x 3" BPE 167 gr. powder, 570 Gr. bullet, 1725 FPS. 577 x 3" BPE 167 Gr. powder, 610 gr. bullet, 1650 FPS 577 Nitro for Black 2 3/4" 75 gr. powder, 570 gr. bullet, 1650 FPS. 577 Nitro for Black 3" 75 gr. powder, 570 gr. bullet, 1900 FPS. 577 Nitro for Black 3" 75 gr. powder, 650 gr. bullet, 1850 FPS. I took these figures from "Shooting the British Double Rifle" by Graeme Wright. Visually comparing the above data, I wouldn't place a lot of faith in the published velocity of some of these loads. There was a 577 3 1/4" case, which in it's black powder loading should be more powerfull than the smaller cases. I haven't seen any data on this case. I am going to try the Swiss black power in my 577x 2 3/4"BPE double rifle. It's regulated for the 160/520 gr. load. The gauge rifles seem to regulate with modern black powder. If the Swiss stuff is a little hotter it might work in my 577, after all it's a 24 gauge. Dave

Mike O, My opinion is that it is a great round, fun to shoot and when you uncase it at the range someone always asks "is that a shotgun?" when you reply, "no it's a rifle" and they look down the tubes, their next exclamation is "holy S--- what are you going to shoot with that?" "Anything I want to." Ross Seyfried says that Swiss 1 1/2f is the black powder to use in any of the express calibers as it gives the best velocity. I haven't tried black powder, my load, again from Seyfried, is Jamison brass, a Federal 215 primer, 64 grains of H4198, dacron filler and a 540 grain cast bullet. When I do my part it shoots very well, 2 to 2 1/2 inch six shot groups at 50 yards. I was going to carry it last elk season but the weather turned to snow for opening morning and I couldn't even think about falling with it so I took my 375 instead.
