I'm not a 98 expert but I do know that the true "Magnum Mauser" is very pricey. A big-bore can be made out of a highly modified standard length 98 and that may be what Mitchell's and others are offering.
With modern manufacturing mathods I don't see why these genuine Magnum actions should be so expensive. Look they don't charge 3x more for Trojan 'Magnums'. Guess for a plebian hombre like myself the only choices are ZKK 602, BKK, CZ550 or Ruger.
I suppose everyone knows you can buy a Magnum Mauser made by "Mauser". Check out their web site http://www.mauserwaffen.de and you may find that at an equal price, having the Mauser coat-of-arms on the gun may have some appeal.
