I have a project tucked away in the back of my mind to get around to buying a DGR one day -

I was thinking along the lines of a CZ 550 .458win that I would re-chamber to the lott.

Now I see that the Wincester mod70 has been "catalogued" and is therefore availiable in this country in .470Capstick.
Most likely this is something an independant smith put together and submitted, but once it has been cataloged, the law will allow anyone to replicate it...

Aside from that an Italian custom maker offers a very nice rifle both in a sythetic and wood version but from memory the price is something like 3500 or 4000EU(nearly $5000USD)

So now I get to thinking, if I was going to get a DGR, would it be a .458lott or a .470Capstick?

I can't see a reason to go with the Lott anymore...

I have rifles in 458 lott and in 470 capstick, so here is my report:

470 CAPSTICK

1. It is the max cartridge size you can fit in an H&H size action without massive rework (such as 500 jeffery).

2. It has a parallel sided neck and ghost shoulder. I have found this leads to superb accuracy. In contrast, the continuously tapered sides of the 458 lott are not conducive to accuracy and can lead to bulging of your cartridges at the bullet base.

3. This cartridge is just plain cool.

458 LOTT

A. There is a pretty good likelihood of being able to find some 458 lott or 458 win mag in countries like Zim and Tanzania in case the airline loses your ammo suitcase.

B. .458 bullets are common and relatively inexpensive.

C. There is much more variety of bullets in .458.

D. Resale value of a Lott is higher because there is factory ammo available for it (in the USA).

I suspect the Lott will soon become a standard caliber in most factory rifles and will in time be as famous as the great 375 H&H, something I don't see for the Capstick...

Either one would suit me and both are fine rounds but the Lott is the more practical and the Capstick has nothing on the Lott in the real world of knocking down big tough animals, just on paper and in the minds of some that live in a world of theory and balistic space, at least thats my opine...

The answer is that you need both

I faced the same question and settled on the Lott simply based on component price. Practice ammo will be cheaper to make up, hence used more often, and I need the practice more than the extra bullet diameter.

Express,
Here's the story... they both chucnk 500 grains at about 2300... and the 458 modified to 458 lott will cost you all of about 100 plus dies.

do the lott first, and if it dosent do what you want, rebarrel.

I have a .470 Capstick, and I doubt it has any significant advantage over the .458 Lott beyond the .017" larger diameter.

If you want something different, build the .470; if economics are an issue, the .458 Lott will be cheaper to build (just re-chamber) and shoot (there are many inexpensive .458" projectiles available compared to .475"; however, you only need one good soft and one good solid for hunting ).

Got both. The Capstick is my pick. Feeds better and is more accurate. Also--- you got .475 vs .458 -- the increase in frontal area provides a better blow! In my opinion it is noticable-- no matter what lott fanatics may say!!
The Capstick is basically a modern .470 Nitro in performance-- so you can DECREASE max loadings in the Capstick to equal 470 Nitro Ballistics---- and I never heard anyone complain the .470 Nitro was an inferior stopper!

Why go to all of that trouble. Give this guy a call. 888-207-2220. It is a gun shop in Norcross Georgia. He has had the CZ 550 American (field grade)in .458 Lott for about $739. I like the one in .416 Rigby for $689. I am not connected to him in any way. I was just doing a search on gunbroker.com and found some of his listings the other day.
