Well here is my 375 H&H Model 70. It is a 1961 H&H Magnum action with 24" Douglas Premium, Stainless, #5 Contour, 1:12 Twist barrel installed by I.T.D. Custom Gun in Minerva, OH.

The front sight is a Williams 5/16" ramp with a .375N Williams FireSight insert.

The rear sight is a Marbles #30 with Green Fibre-Optic insert.

That is a 2-7x Leupold Vari-X IIc scope in Leupold QR bases and rings.

The recoil crossbolts in the stock were installed by Ahlman's in MN. I refinished the stock with WinRest pre 64 stock oil, fit the recoil pad, and recut the checkering. I also full length bedded the stock with Acraglas Gel.

I purposely left the dings and dents in the stock. The stock was purchased on eBay as a standard pre 64 Win 70 stock and what a surprize when it turned out to be a 300 H&H model; that saved some magazine well work.

The gun is a solid hunting rifle pieced together from good but not much collector value modified pieces. It shoots great and functions smooth as glass.

It is your rifle and if it pleases you then it has done its job. Collector value is for the next guy. Why worry about him?

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

I like it just fine. I made it up just like I wanted it. I was more or less heading off the pass comments about altering what was left of an expensive and collectible M70. The receiver is pitted and was reblued right over the pitting. The stock was in rough shape and already cut-off; I didn't want to hear about me having non-standard crossbolts and opening up the barrel channel on a 300 H&H stock. It carries very nicely. I can't wait to drill a bear with it!

Hey, that looks like a great rifle to me. It is what you wanted in a rifle and will likely serve you well. The bears had better watch out!

You did what I am attempting to accomplish only my "donor" pre '64 action was in a fire and waiting to see if the receiver will pass testing. Don't plan on fully restoring, but just as you did, end up with a very useful hunting rifle here in the mtns. of WV. If possible will most likely go w/ 358Win for my purposes. Kind of like "the right tool for the job" rifle. Hope mine turns out as well done as yours.

A couple of years ago, my buddy found a P-64 H&H action, a late one, nicely re-blued, but, not as sleekly finished as earlier versions.

He then found an un-fired .375H&H barrel sts. Classic and a Micky MC style stock on e-bay for $100.00 each. He started putting a Grizzly protector rifle together as he is in the prospecting game and then decided to sell me the un-finised project.

The bbl was already cut to 20", I had Recknagel irons of the "fire glow" type, the skeleton rear and banded front installed, Leupy QRWs and 25C-MHD scope and the metal Gun-Koted, while the stock was painted flat brown.

The whole package was not pricey, by P-64 Mod. 70 standards and I have had three dozen of these rifles over the years and it shoots "lights out" with 300NPs. It handles like a dream and if I ding it in the bush, so what.

This is an ideal BC Grizzly rifle and what I wished I had had when working alone in the remote wilderness for many moons. So, while I have quite a number of cherry P-64s, another .375 and four .338s among them, carefully beded into fine synthetics, this "parts gun" is what I carry.

Good on ya, nothing like a P-64 -.375H&H and my little shorty is EASY to shoot well as I expect yours will be. I had dibs on another action from the same chap, but, with two .375s, four 9.3s, five .338s, two custom lever .45-70s and a Browning FN-.458WM, I am about "done" with big guns!

What are you loading?

Like I've said before, if you married a pretty lady, would you save her for the next guy?
Nice job, that looks like a great rifle to hunt with. You are the man to please.

The thought of a nice utility rifle that performs well and that you do not have to worry about dinging or denting is very appealing. I would enjoy having one like that.

The funny thing about collectors value is it's only worth something if you sell it.
