I read the article in American Rifleman about the new Win 1895 in 405 Win and 2(!) guys both fired reloads in the new rifle and was getting 2+ inch groups at 50 YDS with this gun (and 4+" gr at 100 yds). My brother wanted one of these rifles, but not if they're this bad. Anyone ever shoot an 1895? The must be more accurate than that!! I have a muzzleloader with semi-buckhorn sights that can do WAAAAAY better than that!

I noticed this too. If nothing else it is nice to see an author who tells it like it is, and actually mentions the groups he shoots. I think half of the guys out there today would claim 1/2 moa accuracy.

4x4,
Your ML's barrel is stiffer, and you probably don't have a two-piece stock.

Besides, 4MOA is probably within USRAC's standards for this rifle. Otherwise, they would not have sent it to the writer.

The fact that these new '95s have a 5lb trigger pull didn't help the groups either I'll bet.

I can not speak for the new USRAC M95's in .405, but my Browning M95 .30-06 would consistemtly shoot 2" or less 5 shot groups at 100 yards with iron sights. I have since rebored the rifle to .35 Whelen, and have not yet done much load testing, but with Remington factory 250 grain loads, it still holds 2" at 100 yards. I suspect that 2" at 100 yards is a reasonable expectation for a decent M95.

In Brian Pearce's article on the new 1895 in 405,he was getting 2 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards from the bench with the factory iron sights.

I don't think most of the writers at the American Rifleman can shoot at all.Almost every one of the rifles they have tested, including some renowned for exellent out of the box accuracy, have grouped 1.5 MOA on up to 3.5 MOA at 100 yards with factory ammo.I don't think I have ever read an article where those guys have actualy shot a halfway decent group.Obviously they can talk the talk (barely),but can't walk the walk.

Most gun writer always find somthing good to say about the guns they are testing you know you don't want to kill the goose that is laying the golden eggs.

1.5-3.5 moa is pretty much what I've found out of factory bolt actions using factory loads so 4" out of a lever gun doesn't suprise me. I'm glad the guys at american rifleman are actually telling the truth instead of claiming .5 moa out of everything that comes through their hands. Go to Saeed's reloading page and look at some of the groups he gets, there's not a whole lot of .5" groups and the rifles he's built are using the best barrels out there. I get a bit skeptical of all of the claimed 1/2" rifles you see on these boards, especially when some guy tells you it's the tenth straight ruger he's owned that shoot's 1/2" with factory loads. I've owned two honest 1/2" rifles in my life, one a savage heavy barrel .220 swift, the other a hart barreled 7mm stw. Neither of these rifles would come close to that shooting factory loads, they only shot to their potential with carefully tuned handloads. I don't hold it against a gunwriter for saying he get's 1.5-3.5" groups out of a factory rifle and ammo because that's about as good as you can expect out of most rifles. If you find a factory gun that shoots under 1" with factory loads then you better shake a chicken leg over it and pray it keeps on doing it because you've got a one in a thousand rifle.

I also believe that they where using factory loads if I remember correctly, I bet playing around with powders and different bullets that one could probably get slightly better grouping... and maybe fix that "little" trigger problem.

Boltman,
I must be the luck one,as I own several rifles that right out of the box shoot sub MOA with handloads.Out of a ton of guns that have gone through the house, only one truely couldn't be made to shoot-that was a Browning BLR in 257 Roberts. No matter how much load development or scope switching I did, that thing wouldn't shoot better than 5 inches for only three shots at 100 yards.

Any chance that Winchester will make this in a takedown again?
