Rotator Cuff ? Login/Join

After a recent outing with my 45/70 and a load of RL-7 pushing a 350 bullet at right around 2000 fps I was in mild discomfort. I shrugged it off (no pun intended). Days later when it had become worse, I began to realize what I had pulled my rotator cuff. I didn't think that the recoil was all that bad, I certainly had no thoughts of cutting my shooting short. I don't think the rifle had as much recoil as your average 338 much less something more typical of this forum. Yet this is the only time i have ever been "hurt" shooting. If this were a common problem wouldn't I have heard of it? Could it be a function of the design of the stock and it's fit or lack thereof? I can see how it could occur, but I never imagined this level of recoil could cause it. Does anyone have a clue I can buy?

Just wodering what kind of recoil pad it has on it? I replaced my Guide Gun's pad with a Pachmayr before I fired a shot.

Doc,

Are you mounting the gun properly? Nice and snug on your shoulder close to your neck and not out on the end of your shoulder. The only time I have soreness from shooting my .375 is when I don't get it mounted "nice and tight".

Just a thought.

Regards,

Terry

DOC,
Who says you "pulled" your rotator cuff? Is this a self diagnosis? Are you a physician?

How about bursitis, tendinitis, arthritis, bruising, acromioclavicular joint separation/strain/sprain, etc? Could there be some pathological process going on in your shoulder girdle that was just uncovered by the trauma (relatively minor) that you describe? I don't know.

That is why you see a doctor for a bit of history taking and some simple physical exam.

Then there are X-rays, arthrograms, bone scans, and MRI's if indicated or if questions
about the diagnosis are not satisfactorily simple.

The shoulder is the lousiest joint in the body, or the most marvelous, in its design and functioning, depending on the point of view. It is like a cup sitting on a saucer, and held together by a cuff of muscles and tendons, the rotator cuff.

Not even an orthopedic surgeon could help without getting his hands on you in an exam.

"Pulled" is my term. I thing the doctor's were "stretching and maybe even tearing". I am fairly ignorant in medical terminolgy. Rotator cuff is the best guess sight unseen of the orthopedic surgeon that did my knee. She sounded fairly confident and I trust her judgement. Of course her opinion may change once she gets her hands on me. I can't remember any particular shot that I mount the rifle well. Obviously there could be some underlying cause, but I'd rather it be that the rifle butt caught me just so and stretched some muscle some way it didn't care for I'll be good as new in a couple of weeks. Wishfull thinking?

If you are shooting a curved steel butt plate, I could see this happening. Try a Past pad for extended shooting sessions.

DOC,
Are you in the habit of or did you on this session swing your arm around like a propeller to releave discomfort from shooting? If you have a 'spur', weak A/C joint, or an old "sleeping" injury, this type of movement could possibly be the etiology of your problem. As RAB said, see your orthopod for an evaluation. Hope you have a speedy recovery
All the best,
SAM

Doc, I had a similar problem last year and let it go for about a year figuring it would work its self out. Well it didn't and when I finally went to my Doctor who prescribed "Celebrex" and I was back to 100%in no time. Call your Doctor. Good luck.

On June 7, 2000 I had the tendon below my right clavical repaired, sub-scapularius muscle re-attached and bone spurs removed in my right shoulder. As yet, I haven't fired anything larger than 375 H&H's and 416 Remingtons, and I not having any problems.

Proper holding shouldn't hurt the shoulder joint. I'm not discounting your pain, but I think your problem may be something else.

I have just returned from the doctor and I have good news. First she thinks I have strained a ligament, but most likely not shooting, but falling on my ass in the ice and snow later that day. Her determination is that the most likey injury occured when I tried to catch myself and I didn't put the two together because I was still buzzing from overdoing it with the 45-70. For those that haven't tried them these are fantastic little rifles, but recoil is all out of proportion to the ballistics. Joe D of Realguns.com says he'd rather should his 416 Weatherby from the bench. I don't think I'd go that far. I probably overreacted, but I can't imagine not being able to shoot without this type of distraction.

DOC,
Good to hear that you are O.K. and on the mend. Have you tried the 3 1/2" Winchester new magnum Turkey loads? They are "SPECIAL" the first time that you shoot one and had no idea that it was going to be what it was!
Take care.

My right shoulder has been messed up for a couple years (well, since '98 actually). I figured I had bursitis from overdoing it playing mixed slow-pitch. Re-injured it playing volleyball in Mexico last year and it has been bad all year. Again I thought it was just bursitis. Finally went to see a doctor last week, and have to return Thursday. Turns out my philosophy of "ignore it and it will go away" wasn't so bright. I will have a bit of physio for a while (couple months) but he doesn't think I will need surgery.

So, what's my point? I can hardly hoist a beer with my right hand, but it hasn't affected my shooting!
