I'm looking at getting the 1750 Pelican for shipping rifles to the smith as well as for travel but based on the dimensions I see online, I can't seem to orient my rifles with the scopes on to fit within the 13.5 inch space. without the rifles being very (too) close together.

IF you use the 1750 with 2 scoped rifles would you mind posting pics or PM'ing me so I can see how they fit? If you live near Seattle I'll buy you a beer if we can meet so I can test fit my rifles before spending the cash on shipping to have one sent to me.

Thanks,

I love my Pelican 1750 cases but I haven't been able to fit two scoped rifles inside without bumping/being perilously close together/too close to the edges. Probably not what you want to hear so sorry for the bad news.

I just want an honest opinion, and I appreciate your comment. The best I can seem to get is about an inch between the muzzle and the stock of the other rifle. This is with the scopes about an inch from the edges of the dimension given. I don't know if that's sufficient or not but it seems close for the monkey handlers...

I have also been looking at the ICC case. Basically I just want one that's gonna work and not be a pain.

Here are a 416 Taylor and a 470 Mbogo in my Pelican 1750. Both have scopes on.

That's about the same clearances I have in mine. I have some thicker foam padding that I slide in at the end of the muzzle and along the stock of the other rifle where it could hit.

I traveled to RSA and back with a 300 WM and 375 H&H, then to Tanzania and back with the same case and foam re-cut for the 416T and 470 Mbogo as seen as above.

The baggage monkeys managed to damage the outside of the case, but the rifles were undamaged and the inside of the case looks just like when I cut the foam out to fit the rifles. Smiler

Thanks for the pic Canuck. The sizing of the case makes wish for just a few more inches in both dimensions, maybe 16 inches.

Looks like you leave the bolts in?

I have also thought of removing the scopes and putting them in-between the rifles (moving them closer to the edges to make room between) but I'd have to lay that out to see if there is enough room.

Before I started using a TuffPak I used a Pelican case.

I have never used the foam in the case. I always put the rifles, and the handguns in good soft cases, and put them inside the Pelican. I always have my scopes "UP" toward the handle never "upside down".

The bolts are in for the picture, but I usually remove them for air travel.

I considered removing the scopes as well, but when I first bought the case I cut the foam out for a rifle with Leupold dual dovetail mounts. When I used it with the big bores I couldn't find a replacement foam layer to cut for them with scopes removed, so I just reused it with a little tweaking.

When I went to RSA in 2007 I took my M70 with a 3-9x Burris and my Ruger RSM with a 1.5-5x Leupold. They both fit in a 1758 with plenty of room to spare.

Thanks for the replies.

I also found this new SKB:

It's touted as new so it looks to try to fit right in the market of what we are talking about.

Well, I lucked into finding a 1750, used but absolutely like new for $175. Rifles fit fine and they seem to have a tad more room between them having both scopes 'up' as mentioned above. Great case, but am scheming a plan for a way to keep the latches closed as I have heard they get knocked open in travel. I'll let you know if my idea works.

Thanks for your comments and advice.

Cheers.

You are correct. The Pelican case will be "sucked down" while at altitude and the latches will become "floppy".

On my older Pelican I do 2 things. I leave the valve open so the case can bleed air in and out, and I duck tape the latches down after TSA inspectes it.

The first Time this happened to me. My Pelican case came down the baggage conveyor belt with all the latches flapping open, I nearly had a heart attack as I thought all my stuff inside had been stolen...

Then I noticed my locks were still on the case...

However the case had a vacume and I could not open it till I loosened up the purge valve.

Thanks for the advice. My initial idea for a latch-lock didn't work so It's on to round 2. The thing has 4 lock hasps so I;m not too concerned about people getting in, just keeping the latches closed. This issue could be solved very easily by Pelican by a simple change in the flanges beside the latches.

It is a very stout case and one I am looking forward to putting some miles on! Now...where is my electric carving knife...I got some foam to slice and dice!

No problem with two erifles with big scopes in a large Storm case. I recomend a really tight fit with the foam linins so that the rifles don't move.

The benefit of Pelican over Storm is the metal over the locking holes, you will snip a Storm with a side cutter!

I'm looking to modifly mine with a bent plate that slips over prior to putting the padlock through.

I have several 1750 cases, but only carry one rifle in them at a time.

When I went to RSA last year with my son, I bought a Pelican 1770 to carry two rifles. It's a beast! But works great!

B&H Photo had the best prices at the time.

Here is mine. I like the scopes to be to the inside.

Hi Chez,

Thanks for the pic! I will see if my rifles fit better that way, I didn't even try it that way yet. Not gonna cut the foam till sure which way works best.

Appreciate the posts!

I have two pieces of high density foam, one cutout to fit a M70 416 and a 470 K Gun. The other is cut out to fit 2 M70's, a 416 and a 300 Win Mag. They are cut out with foam all around them in the the manner Canuck showed in his post.

The 300 is equipped with a Leupold LPS scope, the 416 carries a smaller VXIII. Never had an issue.

I've used duct tape for many years following a latch coming open during travel. Low-tech, but it has always been effective.

Looks like I'll have to be a little more creative with my layout. Thanks for all of the pics.
