Might want to take a look at the Remington web site and it would appear the subject rifle has been altered to make it a far cry from the original versions offered by Remington. Has the much better appearing stock, laminated walnut, better shaped stock, barrel band, safari type open rear sight(?) and for a list price of 1K, competitive in the market. I do question the statement that it is built on a Mauser long action and believe they are simply referring to the "opened up" 98 style action. Doubt it is a true magnum length action(?)

It's not, it's just an ordinary 98 (Charles Daly) commercial made in Serbia (?). "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. Yep the action is the basic, MKX, Daly commerical 98. The 375 has an extended box in the front requiring metal removal from the feed ramp. A 458 is just the normal box. Sorry there is no way in heck I would pay $1000 for a 798 when I can pick up a used MKX Whitworth style for the same $$. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

it looks as if they responded to the market all right. Clicked on 366 Torque's link and suggested retail has gone up to $1141 since somebody posted they were a grand retail. The answer is still "Bite Me!!", I'll buy a CZ and have a six-shooter in either caliber; plus the option of a 416 Remington, or Lott, or 470 Capstick. And, for less money. Looks like "business as usual" aka SSDD. Rich DRSS Knowledge not shared is knowledge lost...

Remington 798 Safari Grade = everything I don't want in a rifle.

Doesn't look like a bad rifle and I'm sure, since it really is a Mark X, a great foundation to build upon....... "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." Has those damn ugly lines going right down the top of the stock.. Other than that I wouldn't mind to have one.. "Science only goes so far then God takes over."

look at the target, not the stock... _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

I looked at a closeup of the bbl band and it is a 3/4. it didn't go all the way over the top. Unless that has changed, but I doubt it. WOODY Everyone is allowed an opinion, even if its wrong.

Its not the Safari Grade, as I am too cheap. But, to answer Steffen's question, the 798 will take full length SAAMI loads of 91.44 mm. They fit in the magazine box, and the front ring still has the convienent notch from FN to help you thumb it in. Mine feeds the long 300gr. Sierra BT over compressed loads of both IMR 4350 and an Accurate Arms Data powder (86, equal to AA3100). My OAL is 91.2 or .3 mm. My assumption is that if I can make the long BT bullet work, everything else will too. If you buy one, sombody will have to finish up the action. I have stoned the raceways, and used valve grinding compound to slick things up. The action now works like it should, and I will later polish all of the metal, so it works like an old FN. I paid $710.00 for my 375, and I view it as a kit gun, that I will have to finish. By the way, the front lug and 2" of the barrel is glass or epoxy bedded with a metal bedding block in the stock. You will not need to do that work. Arnie
