I have been drooling over a Searcy double for ages but I have a question. On there order form it shows that iron sights are optional. Does the base PH model come with any sights at all? If not which one would you recommend?

Comes with a single blade that is regulated to the your particular caliber...additon blades (range) night sight etc extra.

Read descript under PH model on his website..."Quarter rib w/one fixed rear sight and catepillar front sight"

"catepillar" in this case means NECG/Recknagel front sight.

I second Surestrikes motion, been shooting doubles all my life, mostly fine English rifles, but for a go to Africa rifle, give me a Searcy...I can shoot monolithics without busting a barrel, and I can put them all in one hole at 50 yards with irons..and if a Buff or Lion charges, I can plunk him in the eye, as I don't have a minute of grapefruit gun, I leave those to gunwriters!

Actually, there seems to be some confusion on this point. The gunwriter(s) in question are minute of grapefruit, although the double rifles used can shoot much better than that. Just because a guy is a gunwriter does not mean he knows how to handle heavy recoil.

Snowwolfe, you won't go wrong with one of Bucth Searcy's babies! They all come with excellent iron sights. As some above said you can pay more for addtional flip-ups for longer range. What chambering are you thinking of getting? If you intend useing the rifle mostly in Alaska, then the 450/400 3" is a very versatile chambering, and is perfect for big Alaska Brown bear. That chambering will cost you just a little more, but is absolutely worth every penney. Another is the 375 Flanged, if used only in Alaska, but brass is harder to find for that one. Both are legal for the Big 5 in Africa if you get over the pond, and the 450/400 3" is a very good Cape buffalo round, that can be put in a rifle that is easy to carry all day in the African heat. If you want one of the larger cartridges, the 470NE is the best choice from a return of money at sell time, though overly powerful for only Alaska, and recoil is substantually more than the 450/400 3", even with the extra weight that it must have. My 470NE (not a Searcy) weighs 10.7 pounds, and that is a little light for the 470NE, and it kicks a bunch more than the A&N 450/400 3" I unfortuently sold.

You won't be sorry you bought a Searcy, in any grade, but my choice is the PH model. I'm thinking about getting one of Butch's rifles chambered for the 450/400 3", myself!

I know I wouldnt be sorry. But a lot of guns in the safe have to be sold first. No doubt his rifles are worth every penny and then some but for some of us 10k for a rifle is a huge stretch unless we clear out a lot of cobwebs of unused rifles.
Caliber choice for me would be a 470, just cause<S>.

I agree with MacD37. One of my doubles is a 450/400 3 1/4". If you are going to use it a lot in AK I think it is a better choice than a 470. I used mine on 2 trips to AK, first to take 2 caribou, the second trip for Brown bear, no shots fired on the bear hunt, but I did take 2 nice caribou on the first trip.

Most of the ones, I have met are full of shit! Them being a gun writer doesn't mean they know fuck-all about anything.

My second Searcy arrives the end of October. FUN!

Snowwolfe, I second the folks who recommend the 450/400. I've always thought my 375 is the "perfect rifle" but some how, this seems even more perfect. I've comtemplated ordering one from Butch too. My current 450/400 is in the bush right now but I'll be bringing it back to ER next week. PM me if you'd like to give it a swing. On the otherhand, I totally understand getting a rifle/cal "just because"!!!!!

Retreever, both are 470's, one with an extra set of 12 Ga barrels. I'll be selling one set (I traded with Butch).
