I happened to see a Cogswell & Harrison .375 H&H rifle for sale and was wondering about the company. I'm more familiar with Westley Richards, Rigby, etc. than C&H.

Can anyone give me some background and compare the overall quality? I realize the rifle has a Mauser action as do the WR etc. rifles so that can't be much different. The rifle is certainly priced in the range I would expect for a Westley Richards.

Also curious about a marking on the barrel, that has "H & H NY NY" Does this just mean the rifle was sold at the H&H store in Manhattan? The other barrel marking is "Cogswell & Harrison Ltd. London 168 Piccadilly".

Thanks.

Like all English guns, you need to look at the overall quality of the gun itself.

Every maker put out poor to very high quality guns, with the better known makers more to the high quality and the lesser known makers more to the lower end.

I put C&H at the lower end - haven't seen many really nice one's.

Not sure on the H&H NY NY.

Address for C&H is correct. Proof marks will tell you when it is made (approx),
serial number an exact year.

If it's priced up with WR stuff, it would have to be good. C&H don't exactly have the cachet
like the others IMHO.

Also check the rate of twist. many C&H use 1:17 or 1:18 twist instead of the more usual 1:14. Makes them super accurate with 270grn bullets but have seen problems with 300grn bullets used on ele that were insufficinetly stable- particularly the mono's.

Had one in .404 - I do not miss it.
