I think some people get too wrapped up in "defining" a Large Bore and they turn into Big Bores.... 375 Ruger- The NEW KING of the .375's!!

Before ever finding and joining AR in January of 2004, I thought: small bore: under .257 medium bore: .257 - .358 large bore: over .358 Now: Big bore: .585 and up then there is everything else. Honestly... I grew up thinking a 30-06 was the biggest and baddest rifle on the planet. And I believed this until I was literally almost 20 years old! Then I learned of the magical 500NE from a local dealer who had it on the wall for an ungodly amount of cash for purchase. After that it was all downhill...So in my personal opinion, anything larger than the typical 30 caliber rifle is a BIG BORE rifle...But im a little different that others.

If we're talking two SPORTING RIFLE SMOKELESS powder categories, large & small, I'll vote that Big Bore starts at .375 with a least 270 grn bullet (375 H&H Flanged Mag) energy. If we're going small, medium, large, I'll vote that Big Bore is .45 and up, with the .550 thru .620 cals. as Super BB's. Hubel's 700 HE Belted is a Super Duper BB and is as cool as can be for a bolt action magazine fed rifle. We all know my thoughts on the 700 Nitro Express and Bill Feldstein... Jack OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}

When I got my 243 I thought "I finally have a high power rifle!" When I moved to Montana in the early 1970s and started to help out on guided hunts in the Bob Marshall I thought I needed something a little stouter since grizzlies were around so I bought a 270. So then in 2008 I bought my CZ 550 in 375 H&H and thought now I have an elephant gun! But then I found AR ... So now I have a medium bore 500 Jeffery ... Would you hunt the Big 5 with it? If you answered yes, then it's a big bore.

My perspective is a little different because of the types of guns I build....but I generally start to consider rifles a Big Bore at the 8 Bore(.835") level, but that is because almost everything I build is black powder(cartridge and muzzleloader) and almost always shoots a round ball. Colin

I am not sure if I would say "Big Bores" start at 416 or 458, but I am adamant that the cartridge must be able to push a bullet with a sectional density of .300 to >2,000fps. This culls (great, though underpowered) rounds such as the 45-70 and 43 Mauser from the discussion. I know this pisses off the 45-70 fans, but it really simplifies the discussion. Another vote for 40 caliber and up, in smokeless rounds. Matt FISH!! Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984: "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
