what is your most accurate round for the 458?
I am looking for info regarding my favorite cartridge...the 458 win mag. what is your most accurate loading? which rifle are you shooting it from? I am trying looking to load some ammo but experimenting with different bullets is very expensive. so far I have tried: sierra 300gr HP, BarnesX 300gr, and Cast Performance 440gr. Poor accuracy. I am considering going back to the good old bullet it was designed for...the large Hornady 500gr soft point.

Dr. John,

Does your rifle have a custom chamber or is it production. The reason being that many production chamber have extremely long throats.

In my experience with two 458 Win Mags one custom the other a M70 Supergrade the longer heavier bullets shoot best. In both of my rifles the 300 - 350 grain bullets would post 3-5 inch groups at 100 yards. The 405 Remington would print around 2 - 2.5 and the 500 Hornandy with a heavily compressed charge of IMR3031 (which I used exclusively) would make it down to 1.5 inches.

Additional note. I never had a cast bullet that would print either of my rifles. Loaded to 1500 fps or so I could get 4 inch groups at 50 yards. Loaded to 2000 fps range I was luck to hit a 12 square at 100 yards.

Just I hope this information was helpful.

Todd,
the barrel came in 458 cal. but was reamed by the gunsmith with a standard reamer so I am assuming the throat is long.

I was very dissapointed with the cast bullets. I thought I found a great affordable bullet for practice and hunting.

I have also considered bullets from Hawk. they make heavy semi-spitzer bullets but I am not sure as to the performance of these.
If anyone has any experience with them I would like to know.

Woodleighs are nice also but more pricy. accuracy?

how about swift bullets?

how about the heavy Barnes X?

I would prefer lighter bullets but I do not think they will work well in the 458.

Hornady 350g rn Win brass, 68.0g H4198, CCI250 or Fed.215, OAL 2.960 & Crimped, will shoot 1" groups @ 100yds & 3" @ 200yds all day long in a VZ-24 Mauser with a 22" Shilen BBl.that I put together this December. 500g Hornady W/62g H4198 are also 1" or less @ 100yds. These were the first loads I tried in this rifle, I think I found the hot ticket!
