"Latest acquisition - a SAKO SAFARI in a very Rare Caliber - 9.3x62mm"

I've always liked Sako Safari Rifles. (I have 3 of them) And now I just snagged a super rare one in a non-magnum 9.3x62mm caliber. According to Stoegers, they had only seen six Safari rifles in this caliber. And this one comes with the original box and papers. I can't wait til it gets here.

I don't know a thing about this caliber. I have dies and brass coming, and have lots of bullets from my 9.3x74R DR.

Anyone have any experience with loading for this caliber?

9,3 x 62 is a very common caliber in Europe and especially in Scandinavia. Very good for moose, grizzly and large Wild Boar. Also for large anthelope in Africa. Otto Bock from Germany I think was the inventor of the caliber.

Good luck with the Finnish Sako Smiler I just bought a Heym SR21 Super Express in the same Caliber.

buckstix If you want to have a real special SAKO Safari you should buy this one. It´s for sale in local gunshop here in Finland. Caliber is .30-06 but engravings were ordered by factory and so this is very rare one. Price is quite special too i.e. 24 990€ Smiler

For top-end loads from 232-320 grain bullets, best powder by far is RL-17 (with Alliant 2000-MR reasonably close behind). This powder will put the 9.3x62 right into the bottom end of .375 H&H ballistics.

Not weighty at all. It weighs 8 pounds, .9 ounces empty, and 8 pounds 8.3 ounces loaded. (1 up 5 down)

Congratulations on a great rifle in a great caliber.

PM me with your email and I will send you several articles and bullet tests as well as load data, which I have shared with about 30+ people here on AR in the last 10 years.

If you have Ramshot Big Game powder it is exceptional in the 9.3x62, 270 grain bullets up through 286, great velocity and accuracy.

You are welcome. Must be over 30 people that I have shared that info with. Added a couple of those articles recently.

Great caliber and the information is so consistent. Never read a bad word about this great caliber.

113 years and still going strong. Probably more popular than ever before!

And that Sako Hunter - great rifle. I owned a few over the years - a 6.5X55, 308 & 270, IIRC.

BTW, this is a Safari model, not a Hunter.

Yes it has the half rib and larger caliber. 375 H&H is similar.

The basic action is still the same as the Hunter action that was used for other cartridges of similar length. Beautiful rifles. I wish I could have held on to my original 6.5X55 Frowner

Have used 250, 286, 300 and 320grn bullets over the years on game from rabbits and pigs to lion, hippos and several Buffalo.
Have decided 286grn WOODLEIGH RNS , FMJ and Swift A Frames are the "go to" for me

Graffs used to sell Privi Partizan 9.3 cal 286 gr bullets in bulk very cheap. Those would be ideal for practice.

Not bad on game too from some tests I sent you.

IIRC the Woodleigh and Lapua Mega performed very similar.

9.3x62 is a great caliber. I just recently came back from Namibia, and used mine on everything from eland to warthog. I was using 286 gr Barnes TSX bullets, and a powder charge of vhitavouri N135 powder. Very accurate and great performance.

do you mind sharing the load and the speed if you measured it?

Ive use the 93x62 on most big game best I recall, I used it in Africa for Plains game and shot several buffalo with it..Its been my elk rifle on nemorous occasions, a couple of moose and bear..

I believe it as good as a 375 N&H in the field, at least I couldn't see any difference in the result on game, regardless of size..

The 9.3x62 and the .338 Win have been my favorites for many years.

I've been handloading it for years..Favorite bullets are Woodleigh 286 and 320 gr., Swift 300 gr., and 286 Noslers..I use the 250 gr. bullets for deer. The powders I like are RL-15 and lately the newer RL-17 is even better. H414 is a good powder also..I can get real close to a 375 H&H with a proper handload and a 24 or 26 inch barrel..

I have been hunting with the 9.3 x 62 for several years now. Been using the 250 grain Barnes most of the time. It does the job and there is no magnum recoil to deal with at all.
