Has anybody in california received approval from the DOJ (DD form) to build the 700 BMG Improved? I was informed that it could / would be one year to be approved or denied. The gentleman I spoke with also informed me that the 60(0) caliber did not require approval so the 600 BMG Improved would be another alternative. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Not sure how it works in foreign countires like Freakafornika. As long as "sporting" it is good to go in Amerika.

According to Butch Searcy in Boron, California the designation of a "sporting cartridge" appears to be all that's needed. I believe Butch sells .600 and .700 NE versions of his doubles and has no special license. This means it was never used as a Military cartridge independent of bore size. Thus ,a .700 BMG should be perfectly legal. Of course who know whats legal in Kalifornia!
Just ask all the child molesters that run loose here! After all 12 guage rifled shotguns with bore sizes of .727 are sold even in Kalifornia. It is an interesting concept to build a .727 or 12 Guage version of the .700 BMG which could actually fire 12 guage shotgun shells and having a barrel length in excess of 16 inches. This would actually be not very difficult to do despite the shotgunshell rim issue. I believe a Mcmillan bolt can be turned down to work with a rimmed cartridge. Not optimally, but adequately.
Monte Kyser wrote a great article on the .700 BMG Improved for the FCSA newsletter years ago. While a very powerfull cartridge, it's clearly not of any value from a military use standpoint nor practical for even relatively advanced shooters. Recognize that any gun that would handle them needs to be built on a .50BMG action and would weigh 20-25lbs.
Not exactly cheap, portable or of any ptractical value.
These are just curiosities!-Rob

Overkill, the article was published in the 2000 edition of VHP (2 part series) by the FCSA. I loaned my copy out to a person who is reviewing the data. The back issues are not that costly and the money goes to a good organization.

Rob, I have been thinking of the 700 improved as something new to add to my collection. Your 12g project sounds interesting. Do you know what kind of velocities could be obtained using the shotgun shell with a quality turned projectile?

I have given some thought( but nothing more than that) to a 12Guage version of the .50 BMG that with a second bolt designed specifically for the 12 guage rim which would basically make a totally Kalifornia legal version of the 700 BMG Imp. This gun could fire either the 12 guage rifled bullet or a simple 12 guage shotshell. If I ever get serious about it, I'll first talk to my lawyer about it and make sure I have the proper approval before I begin.-Rob
