Ok- I finished the 500 A squared and now I'm ready to try a .585 Nyati. I have a CZ550 and a Win 1917 Enfield action to choose from. Which do you think would be the best way to go? I've got some bertram brass and could turn the rim down a little on the cases to fit the .700 CZ bolt diameter, or just go for broke and spend the time on the 1917. I'm not going for maximum smoke on this thing so reducing the rim diameter .010 might be a good way to go. For those of you who have built these cannons, what would you suggest?-Rob

I placed a deposit on a 602 action this morning as the basis for my .585 project, I am elated that I have taken the first step in making it a reality. So it will be fine just to use the standard rim size without having to rebate??, the 602 and 550 will fit a gibbs .505 rim won't they???. I just can not get enough information on the Nyatti at the minute. Rob let us know how it is all going with your .585 when you get going. Regards PC ------------------

I expect to get my CZ550 action next week, then I'll measure the boltface and make the final decision about how much metal I'll need to remove. I should also have some BERTRAM .585 BRASS tomorrow so that will also help. My feeling is that the Cz550 will be fine but if necessary, some rebating would not bother me at all. Mitch-any suggestions about the feed rails/mag Box modifications that I should make? I'll probably take digital pictures and post them as this project comes together if there is enough interest.-Rob

Rob, Definetly post pictures and keep us posted on the progress. I'm picking up a CZ 550 and starting my 585 project as well. I'm especially interested in what work you have to do on the action. Since I'm not a gunsmith I will probably have someone do the more involved work required. What barrel are you going with?. What about your stock?. Erik

I have a 585 nyati on a winchester model 70, which also has a .700 bolt diameter. It functions perfectly, but to be honest if I had a bigger budget I would go with an action that has a .750 bolt diameter. However, those actions start at $3500, increasing the cost of the project by at least $3000. By the way, don't let stories about recoil scare you. Mine is perfectly manageable up to 2350 fps with 750 grains, which is as high as I have gone. However, I hunted with loads at 2250 fps for manageability. But those 900 grain bullets sure thump me, so I did not hunt with them. By the way, mine has a single stack magazine (2 down, plus 1 up). I guess that is why it feeds so slick. quote: Oh goodie, a local building a 585 Nyati! For a barrel, check out Pac Nor, http://www.pac-nor.com/ You can have them pre-chamber the barrel, which will save you the cost of your smith buying the reamer. For action work, depends on how involved you want to get into the magazene. The bolt will have to be opened up, and some work to feed rails and ramp. A properly dimensioned magazene box is best, and if you don't want a wide body stock, going with a single stack magazene is a better option. If you want to get together and bs about big bores over coffee, or send some lead down range at Rabbit Creek, drop me a line.

I'd love to use a single stack magazine but don't know if anyone makes them for a CZ550? I've ordered the barrel from Pac-Nor and already have a JGS .585 Nyati reamer. Can anyone tell me just how much bolt rim is left after you open up the boltface on a CZ550? I'm just wondering.-Rob

Rob, Give Dennis Olson a call he has tons of experience building 585s he is one of the best with getting them to feed properly. I built my 577 T.Rex on a BBK-02 action and I did not have to rebate the rims of my cases which are .688 compared to the Nyati's .635. The BBK-02 boltface measures .720 to the CZ550s .700 so you should not have to rebate your Nyati cases. I don't have Dennis Olsons number handy but you can find it in Rifle Magazine. Mitch- Thats exactly the info I need. If you could find Denis's number for me I would really appreciate it. I think getting this case to feed properly out of the CZ550 action will be the biggest problem I will face in this conversion. I expect to get some .585 Nyati brass tonight and that will tell me how much to take off the bolt-face as well as reveal the extent of the mag box probem. My biggest concern now is if I will have to change the with of the mag box, follower etc. and how to open the rails to get proper feeding. If Dennis can share this with me, then I think I'll be home free.-Rob

Gentlmen Some 7 years ago I buildt a 585 Nyati on a 602 action , and I ran into a few problems. For starters I started up using the standard(?) rim diameter (I think this was .660??), reworked the crossfeed system (opening up the rails etc. ) and went shooting. I soon discovered that the remaining "lip" on the boltfac would crack and brake of after a couple of rounds. This came from when I worked the bolt feeding another cartridge ,the "lip" was so thin that it consisted of only very hard steel that obviously cracked easily. I ended up replacing the bolt with a boltface diameter of .586 (equal of the 416 Rigby) and rebating al the brass. Now the gun would shoot nicly and feeding seamed alright. Untill I discoverd that the magazine follower would bend in the front end... The problem was that there was to much space in the magazine and it would alow the follower to move forward during recoil and hiting the front end of the magazine, and due to it's ( the follower) weight it would bend. I ended up fixing this problem by reducing the with of the magazine box ,making it a singel stack , I also replaced the original follower with a new titanium follower. The gun worked well ever since , shooting 750 grain bullets at about 2250 and 2350.
