Talked to the boss and she said I can order a barrel for my 470 nitro project. Now here comes the info and questions. It will be stainless steel, so my only choices, found so far, are Pac-Nor and montana rifleman. Pac-Nor offers a 1-16" and 1-18" twist while montana rifleman offers the 1-20". Don't have experience with either brand but have heard on this site that the Pac-Nor is the better brand. My concern is the twist. Which one to go with? The other thing is barrel length. Will be at least 26" but longer is not out of the question either. Not to upset anyone but how about muzzel brakes. Want the finished weight to be around 12# Will be a single shot so am somewhat concerned about the recoil and would like your views on the brake issue. Realize that it is loaded to a relative low pressure so what would you compare recoil to 460 Wby, 458 Win, etc... And what are you guys opinion of ruger factory sights? The reason I'm asking is that being SS I haven't found any after market sights so have decided on Ruger SS front barrel band sight and rear sight. Would any of you know where I could get a set of the sights by chance? Have checked with Numrich gun parts and Brownells and neither have them in SS. Thanks.

Buy Pac-Nor, you won't be sorry and 1:18 will work with 500 gr 470's. Be carefull of what barrel contour you order or you'll have problems finding a barrel band front sight that will fit. Jim Wisner may still make some nice ones. I'm partial to NECG rear sights, but I don't think they make them in SS. As for muzzel brakes, I'd talk to Fritz 454 and see if he will knock one out for you. George Vias's brakes work really well but he may not be making any right now. Remember you want your brake reamed exactly .030 over the bore diameter. You will need a second barrel mounted recoil lug and I strongly suggest you have your stock modified for three mercury recoil reducers and a F990 tripple X pad. Now all you need is a good gunsmith to put it all together. Save yourself alot of grief and give Dennis Olsen a call. Send him money till he says enough and learn to be patient. In the end you'll be much happier.-Rob

Actually Virgin Valley Custom will be doing the work and muzzel brake. Does Jim Wisner have a web site by chance? I had enquired about the muzzel brake beceause I know alot of you have strong dislike for them. I'm not looking to be PC or the anything I was just wondering if the recoil level of the 470 nitro warants a brake. Thanks.

A 12# 470 doesn't need any type of brake. It will be similiar to a 458. Doubles are usually 10.5 - 11 #.

If you are shooting factory velocity loads you will not need a muzzle brake. Take a look at my site as there is a recoil comparrison chart there that may help you out with your question. The site is www.470mbogo.com and look under "Comparing The Big Bores" section.
Take care

Great info found it quite helpful. Your opening statment indeed holds true for me. I may have been born too late without the large wad of cash but being as John Barness says a " true gun nut" I want the trill and power of those old cartridges. I may never get to Africa after the Big 5. Yet I know of some large pigs that will have a date with a 470 Nitro. If I get around to Bison hunting they too will get a large dose of lead. Sad to say though a earth backstop will be recieving most of the slugs. Was wondering if there was a reason you opted not to go with a barrel banded front sight on your stabel of monsters. Thanks again. [Smile]

I found with the larger barrels that it is very difficult to find a barrel band sight that has the correct bead height etc. I really like the masterpiece front sight from NECG with the fiberoptic bead combined with the Ashley or Express sight peep. It just didn't work out.
Take care

If you are going to hunt deer and pigs with your 470 take a look at www.hawkbullets.com I have used their .025jkt and .035jkt bullets with excellent results in a 450/400 and a 9.3x74R.

Have checked out hawk and plan on buying a few boxes. For my curret targets they seem to be just the ticket. Have also found a source for cast bullets. 500 GC'd for $75 so figure this will be my pratice plinking load. Now all I need to do is find some once fired federal cases and I'll be set. Called Fed. and talked to their ballistision about them and he says they have them but they are not available for sale. Just my luck.

You will have to be pretty lucky to find any once fired 470 brass.
