Simple

A 404, and if you don't like it go for a 416 Rigby.

An alternative for would be 375-404

go with the 470 capstick, will "fit" nicely between the 375 RUM and the 577 3" [Big Grin] - oh yeah, make it real lightweight @ no more than 9.5 pounds [Eek!] [Mad] - will she wear wood or synthetic??

How about a 7mm STW or 375 RUM?
Seriously, here's the specs for the 500 Proper:
Base and belt, same as 460 Weatherby, body 2.385", diameter .568" at shoulder, 35 deg, neck .393", case 2.8" long.
If you start from the case mouth back, all the dimensions are the 500 A-Square, until you get to body length, which is .1" shorter..
You should lose about 5g of water behind the bullet, but gain about 8g over the 495 A-Square.
See if John Ricks is interested in splitting the reamer cost with you, and hand it over to him.
Make sure he understands you want to use 500 A-Square dies (though I'm not sure they're much cheaper than having your own made).

A different, but also excellent idea of mine ( [Big Grin] ) is to chamber for the 470 Mbogo, then just seat the bullets to your rifle's max COL.
Which is what? 3.6" or 3.66"?

Are you planning on getting a bigger action and making a BIG gun with it?
If so, I'd use this one for something little like a 416, my pick of which would be on the 404 case, like the Dakota for example.

Already have a 375 RUM and a 7mm STW.THis is a tough choiceAlthough I have been really wanting a 404.24"bbl NECG sights, bbl band front sling swivel mount probably a 1/4 rib, most likely will start out wiht a synthetic stock,The action is stainless steel, beed blast the metal or do some sort of a tefleon coat?? A black stock with a balck finish on all the metal would look good.

Mike,

I have a .470 Capstick on a Model 70 action, and it is one badassmotherpusbucket on buffalo! It is the rifle in my photo below.

I have NECG sights, barrel band swivel, etc.

Here are some pics:

Go for a .404 Jeffery or the .458 Lott.

I have a little bit of a soft spot for the .404 and I will build one one day but it will be on a mauser 98 and will be orginal looking. For that action I would build an Alaskan .458 Lott stainless with synthetic stock, a .404 needs "orginal" if you know what I mean. The .458 Lott has dies and brass for a good price from grafs and also you have a whole bunch of cheap 45/70 style bullets to use as well as woodleigh 500 gr smashers [Cool]

Well since I prefer keeping my thumb out of my nose I would opt for the 404 over the other calibers you listed [Big Grin] Besides I have used the 404 extensively and it shall forever be my favorite DGR...

Keep in mind that the 1999 Montana action is not as thick as the Win. M-70 and I don't think you can find a drop box for the Montana action, therefore I am going to sell my Montana action and fine a M-70 pre 64 or Mauser action..and get a Blackburn drop box, The Montana isn't the action for the 404 or the fat rounds....Anyone wanna trade actions with me...The Montana would make a real nice 416 Rem. or 375 H&H......

Don't want to sound like a broken record,
but do the 550 Mag that has been developed here.
Plentifull Weatherby brass and feeds easy. The absolute best use for Wea brass.Check the 550 thread.Ed.

If it won't fit the Jeffery easily, it sure won't fit any Weatherby-based round, like the 550 or my 500. What's the COL on the 550? 3.8" or so, right?

The 550 Mag can be loaded to a 3.6 inch length,
or on up to about 3.85, with a 700 grain bullet, being it is a straight
case.Bullet can be seated to a variety of lengths.
But the case not being larger diameter like
500 Jeffrey or 505 Gibbs makes feeding and
magazine work easier.
A lot of folks here say to do the ASquare as a better choice in choosing from a variety of
calibers between .500 and .585, for a variety of reasons like feeding, and brass availability. So I really feel that any rifle a 500ASq will work in, and that the reasons the ASq is recommended, also means the 550 is better, and the 550 will work in, and you get the ultimate out of Weatherby brass.Ed.

I stuck some 375 ultra cases down into the mag, when my gunsmith works his magic on the mag box it will feed the 404 with no problems, [Big Grin] I am leaning heavily toward the 470 Capstick
