Man wish you hadn't made me reread and notice all my typos!! Eeker

RIP and others are simply using the correct 400 Whelen dimensions and setting their chambers up to allow them to seat the bullets out. Pretty much giving them the same net capacity as the 400PDK 411Hawk etc.

As usual just my $.02

Not being an English major myself, as long as its relatively easily decipherable. I don't worry much about typos. Wink
I was doing a 400 Whelan search and came up with this 411 Hawk thread.
I appreciate all the thotful experiments and rifles built along this 06 case necked up to 41 cal.
Mart; kinda clinched it for me with his Alaskan approach. Like many before I am coming to the conclusion that a bolt action 450/400 equivalent 8 lb rifle with cup and core 400 gr bullets or modern mono metal/ combo/ A Frame bullets will do most of the big game/ dangerous game hunting I will ever need or want.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

I've tired using only the extractor to headspace on a forming rounds. It worked. Don't see why it wouldn't on a loaded round. Heck might to time for a 423 PDK. Nope 404PDK sound better. dancing

OK had coffee. Help me see what a 423 400gr would gain you over a 411 400gr. Other than a conversation at the campfire.
Slightly larger bullet diameter equals slightly shorter bullet length which equals slightly greater case powder capacity...

With an actual difference only worth discussing around the campfire. Wink coffee

Sure not something I would choose to send time on to find out. Can't remember the caliber of the Fossdal. Wasn't it 425

10-4 on the campfire discussion.

Yes, 425 Fossdal I believe due to .425" groove diameter of the barrel - if I recollect correctly the bullets are .423" diameter though...

Interesting read; I notice they recommend using the .400 Brown Whelen reloading dies.

Interesting read;

Yep. I knew I should have named the 400PDK the 10.4x67. rotflmo

With bullets from 180gr to 400 covers a lot of bases. Only issue I've had is lighter bullets staying together. Need to try some top $$ light ones.
