I have never been a single shot person for dangerous game, but ones ideas change like the blowing sands and the idea of a Ruger N0.1 in a 404 Jefferys is appealing to me more and more....It may soon become an obsession..

Ok poster # 3, who are you and what have you done with Ray ?
I have a 500NE on the Ruger #1 and am very happy with it. I am seriously looking at either the 404 or 300H&H in another #1 action I have recently come into possesion of. Both are great calibres with more than a hint of nostalgia. If it was not for the fact I have a 375 in pre'64 then that is the calibre I would be building next.

Ray. From what I understand, your biggest problen is finding one. I've heard storied about people having problems with ammo in the .404, apparently based on varying dimensions of the various case Manufacturors. Don't know how true it is, but I have not had any problems with the one I have. I've also heard that if someone sends one in to Ruger for any reason, they substitute something else rather than return the gun. Doesn't make sense to me, but it's what I've heard bandied about. Of course, one has to take rumors with large quantities of salt. Paul B.

Good question. I dont need another gun but I think I will definitley be needing some sort of nitro express caliber soon. I was thinking of a 470 or 500 nitro express and the ruger No1 would probably be the most economical way to get one.As Ray Atkinson said, single shots may not be the best dangerous game rifle , but unless anthills and tree stumps start charging and attacking ,I think I will be safe.
Hmmm, the possibility of another Perfect African Pair is emergin' from the mist. If you had a Pedersoli/McKool .450 #2, you'd need a "pot" gun when you weren't facin' down some nasty biter/stomper. A .375 Flanged would be too easy so for the sake of obscurity might I suggest a #1 400/350 Rigby? Very popular in its day, don'tcherknow. Taylor thought well of it and potted more than a few lion, etc. with 310 gr. .358s.
You can now buy a factory #1 in 458Lott, a very versatile round (45-70 cast plinking loads to near 460 Wby performance), Internet price around $620. That is probably the most cost effective route to a powerful DGR, if you accept the notion that single shots qualify as DGR's. (I love 'em, regardless; I'm in the process of converting my 458Win to 458Lott.)
If you want more, there's a chance that Ruger may chamber the #1 in 470 sometime in the future due to recent popular demand. And a number of gunsmiths have rebarreled #1's in 500NE, the best bet for a 50 caliber, and even 577NE's in a few instances.

THe 450 #2 in a Ruger Number 1 is really appealing. Much more "novelty factor" than a 458 Lott in one IMHO.Those huge cases really inspire confidence and at normal pressure will last forever. All the power of a 458 win mag at low pressure and in a Ruger number 1 I'm sure you could exceed 458 Lott velocities easily and maybe get close to 460 WBY. The 450#2 would be easy on the shoulder and rather elegant in actuality!-Rob

Rob, I sure like mine. Had it done by Joe MacKool to match the Pedersoli Kodiak. Has a NECG 3/32 front and an AO rear peep. Low pressure yes; a bit more vigorous in recoil than the .458W it used to be though, glad I put a decelerator on it. Ron
Yes that is correct as to the varying chamber reamers for the 404...But if you use a clymer then RWS, Norma, Bell will work fine...I have not had the problem, Ruger did and dropped the caliber rather than admit to a boo boo on their part.....
I did see a #1 in 404 for sale in the last gun list for $1700....
I would opt for one with a Lother Walther .423 barrel....quarter rib, one down only and barrel band swivel and front sight...peep sight and 3X Leupold....That would give me two irons and a scope...
Although I don't believe the SS has any place on a dangerous game hunt and would never recommend it to anyone, for myself I would still do it without hesitation....thats just the way it is...

I have a No 1 in 577 NE 3"! It is a ball to shoot. I can put you in touch with the man that put it together for me. He has also done a 450 NE for another customer. Email me if you want his name and number.

WOW Ray! $1,700? Either he's dreamning, smoking something, or he knows something I don't. I only gave $750 fro mine, and it came with 120 rounds of new brass, dies, shellholder and 80 rounds of loaded ammo. The only unstock thing about the rifle is the idiot put on a muzzle brake. (I hate the damn things.) Still and all, it is a sweet shooting rifle. I figure that once I fireform the brass, partial sizing should alleviate any chamber problems. Paul B.
