Ok, need some replies quick-like before it gets sold! There's a Marlin 1895gs in 45-70, the gun i've been wanting in the local classifieds, $475. I'm assuming it's new, and am gonna try to have my dad call them later about it. Saying it's new, what is it worth, and what could I have my dad try to talk them down to without sounding like he's trying to rip them off? If it is lightly used, what's the going price. Thanks for any replies!

Brand new this gun whole sales for about $510.00. I bought my first used blued guide gun for $375.00 (but that was from a friend). I would offer $425.00 and take it for $450.00. Lightly used (that's a matter of opinion). Ask if they have they have original box? Ask if they have any mounts or other accessories.
Good Luck

If it is in great condition I would value it in the low $400 range.

I would use it for white-tail, everyone has a 30-30, I want a 45-70 to be different. So $425 would be great, $450 would be fine, and $475 if they are firm is still below normal?

Just sold a model 1895g from my personal stock to a friend of a friend for 400 bucks, that seems to be a fair price for one in very good used condition. Mine was a blued model and shot very well and consistant! Good luck and hope you can get what you want. R.

Well, my dad just called...got the answering machine "Hello this is Karen and Aaron..." He didn't leave I message, I asked why and he just said oh I'll try again tomorrow. Mad Hopefully I'll get him to call again tonight. I would call but I'm afraid he wouldn't take me seriously, and I probably wouldn't be able to talk him down for sure.

Never try to negotaite on the phone unless you have first seen the rifle.
What happens if they agree to your price and then you find out it is a piece of crap?
Look at it, inspect it, etc. If the price is fair buy it. If you want to offer less do so with cash in hand.
Thats my story and I am sticking to it!

Good idea! I'm going to church tomorrow which is in the town of the gun. Maybe they will answer then and we can go by and see it.

Well, went to a gun show today...no Guide Gun...until the last rack of guns I went to. It's a ported one, several years old, everything looks excellent except two small dings in the stock by the sling swivel at th butt. Price says $425, he said he would consider $400. My dad has to "talk it over with my mom". I really like the gun, especially in blued, is the porting good or bad, some reviews say it really helps kick, but how much louder does it make it, and is it worth it?

you can always cut off the ported part of the barrel and get rid of that nonsense - it will only deafen your neighbors at the shooting line.

a good rubber recoil pad would be better than holes in the barrel

you should probably be able to talk the seller down $50 - $75 more for this defect . who really wants a barrel with more than 1 hole ?

I second just throwing a limbsaver on it -- you really don't need to port a 45-70 -- even Garretts aren't all that bad.

I have a slip on limbsaver, it works well. the seller won't go below $425. There's the ad in paper, the one for $475, it is new, they finally answered. Sounds like a better deal there.

Cool She may be a "young widow" but I think 10 years is a big age difference...what she would be 66% older than me? animal
