Is there any load data available for the 500 A-Square with 300 grain bullets. I would like to shoot some of the Barnes original 300 grain bullets at higher velocity

I have shot 450 gr with 95gr of RL15. I suppose it would work with 300's. Mine is a 510 Wells but basically the same.

Thanks I may shoot the 450 also. I am going to use it on a bear bait and I need to get the recoil down from the normal 500 grain loads. I have some kids that are going to shoot the A-square and they are less then 100 pounds. Ross

The 450 load is way lighter than a 570 with the same powder charge. A 300 would be sweet. I used trail boss for a '06 type kick but that does not get the speed your looking for.

Just load the 570gr bullets with Trail Boss and your recoil will be dramatically reduced. Muzzle velocity should still be more than adequate for those close range bait shots.

What I wanted to do is drive the light bullets at a high velocity to get a very large wound channel. This spring we took a 470 capstick and drilled the CEB brass bullets to 250 grains and shot bears with them. I want to try the A-Square with 300 grain bullets drilled to 250 also. The idea is a massive wound channel. I don't need penetration on these thin skinned bears. We are shooting from a bench rest at 165 yards with a 16 pound rifle I chambered on a 1.250 32" barrel with a 5 port muzzle brake. Ross

I understand now. I would think that the old Barnes originals would not stand up to high velocites! I would expect that the Barnes at a very high velocity would result in a large diameter shallow wound and a long tracking of a wounded bear. I think you would be better off with a Barnes X bullet drilled out to weigh around 350 gr, seated to the cannelure groove, and a reduced load of IMR4227 say around 75gr. That ought to get about 2500 fps plus or minus, but will still probably kick hard.

Some 15-20 years ago someone I knew was experimenting with 375/50BMG full length.

Loading 300gr. Sierra Game King BT bullets at 3500+ fps.

The performance would have to be seen to believe.

Side by side with a military surplus .50 BMG steel core "AP" BULLETS FAILED TO PENETRATE .750" thick mild steel plate at 100 yards.

The steel core expanded and welded itself into the plate about half way through, with such force of impact that it actually bent the steel plate.

The .375/50BMG was shooting through the steel plate with soft nose hunting bullets like if it was a piece of cardboard.
