Lately the 45-70 has increased in popularity here i scandinavia. Now, I am aware that a number of fine 45ers has been in use 100+ years ago...such as 45-110, 45-90 and so on ...What is it about the 45-70 that made it "survive" for so long and still going strong I might add??? // M

In my opintion . . . The 45-70 is a former US Military Cartridge. That fact alone could explain the 45-70's popularity. The .308, 30-06, and .223 are all quite popular, and for the same reason. However, the 30-40 Krag and the 6mm Lee-Navy are old miltary rounds that are not all that popular (and almost no one chambers them anymore). In fact, the .303 British is far more popular than the 30-40 Krag, and no one has chambered a rifle for .303 in decades. The huge numbers of surplus Enfields have ensured the .303's continued existence. There was a time when surplus Trapdoor Springfields added to the 45-70's popularity, but that time is long past. Nostalgia is certainly part of the appeal. The 45-70 was part of the history and myth of the American West. Americans love that frontier history, and the 45-70 is a link to that period. It can be an accurate round, and it does hit hard at short range. It is also a great cast bullet round. So there are practical uses. Mostly, I think the 45-70 is a "big bore" cartridge with about as much recoil as the average shooter is willing to tolerate. IMHO
