Might be building a rifle in this caliber. Any info will be most appreciated. In a strong modern action what will it accomplish? Is this close to 404J? Barrel length? Rate of twist? Barrel maker? The action is,after examination by a couple experts, a 1934 Postal Mauser. The current barrel will be trashed-8mm. The stock will be slimmed and checkered to hide an inclusion. Pictures of the existing soon to come.

Your thoughts?

if you aren't stuck on building your own, why not just buy a CZ? This now a factory offering, and you know it will function properly.

But, Rich, you don't understand the ACTION... a "legal" mauser, made like a swiss watch, at about the highest level of perfection, besides, perhaps, a 1909, in the Boer big game cartridge ..

Pondoro Taylor didn't think much of the cartridge, the 347 gr. bullet was too light in sectional density for reliable penetration. I could understand trying to get a golden oldy booming again but not building a new one from scratch.

Yes, with modern powders and 400grn bullets, one should be able to do away with the problems of this round found during Taylor's day.

I had a 67 XKE coupe. Now it's a newer XK8 convertible. I'd like to have one of these too, but I like my CZs with their set trigger feature.

Building your own is the best answer...

The stock has full figure from one end to the other. This was a dumbluck purchase by me. I had no idea what it was other than it was a "nice" sporterized Mauser rifle. I bought it in a gunshop in San Antonio prior to the year 2000 for about $275.00. It currently has a Timney trigger.

I tried to get a good full length picture but alas, my photography skills are lacking.

i was in Maputo yesterday and was shown an original double square bridge mauser barreled action in this calibre. It was just the barreled action. The stock is missing. the owner gave me a packet of 100 Kynoch cartridges. They are all in the original packets, 5 in a box and 20 boxes wrapped in brown paper with the tape and label still on,

Cartridges of the world indicate that properly loaded this calibre would be very similar to the venerable 375H&H

Properly loaded this would duplicate the .404 Jeffery, close to 2300 with 400 grs easy.

Well, that settles it! Now I just gotta start saving up for parts. I guess I really just need a barrel. A classic set of iron sights would also be great. If I go with a scope, the base will cover the Mauser crest. Perhaps this is not such a bad thing?

Suggestions for barrel maker? Contour, rate of twist, length, type of rifling..cut, hammer forged, button?

You might consider a barrel-ring mount scope from EAW or Recknagel. That would leave the "Banner" exposed.

As to barrels--sooo many good makers , it's your pick, I've used several.

As to shape, why not try to make the stock and barrel mimic an original period piece.
