Hey Guys

I am helping a friend with rifle selection He is looking at the Ruger RSMs. We have seen them in .375 H&H, with the barrel mounted sling and also with the sling stud in the stock.

Does one set up or the other tell us anything about the rifle? e.g. Were the different versions manufactured during different periods?, is one part of a preferred package? Or just personal preference?

Anything you can tell me will be appreciated.

Not sure what it means that Ruger made two different versions but I would buy the one with the swivel on a barrel band.

ezrly ones had a barrel band with sling mounted in the stock. Current are straight barrel band. I prefer the latter

The earlier ones had the sling on the stock. I have owned both models, in different calibers. Both shot very well. IMHO get the one with the best wood. Can't really go to far wrong with an RSM, a nice rifle for the price.

If you have a choice, go the barrel band and save your finger.

Totally agree,

From my days as a clay target shooter, I hold my left forend hand out with the pointer finger down the side of the gun, pointing at my target.

This is OK on a shotgun, but it makes the forend stud on any rifle sit nicely between the webbing of my pointer finger and "the bird" finger.

I have on more that one occation split the webbing between these fingers with the forend stud under heavy recoil, firing guns above 458.

So if you want to know why you wont find a forend stud on any of my guns over 416, this is the reason.

Touch wood, never an eyebrow cut, but it does cost less in the long run putting barrel bands on compared to doctors and getting stitches

Good points all-

Wanted to see if one or the other was different in some way. I did receive a PM that said some of the stock sling mounted rifles may be puch feed/claw extractor.

Also, why have sling mounts at all- after a while I quit using a sling hunting- they snag & get in the way, etc. Only time to use is when climbing around steep terrain etc. e.g. NZ or mountain hunting.

The one's with the sling in the forearm are the original models made long ago. The barrel contours used them are much heavier than the new ones, which makes the old rifles very barrel heavy. I have the sling stud in the forearm of my 375 and I have never had any problems with that (rifle is pictured in my avatar).

My 416 Rigby is one of the very first ones off the production line and has the swivel stud on the forearm and a 24" barrel. Never had an issue with the stud whacking my hand. I prefer the barrel band but one would have to hold the rifle weird in order to extend your left hand/wrm that fat up to contact the stud during recoil.

I've got the only or maybe one of the only Custom 500 Jeffery RSM's with old style stock sling swivel early models. I've never had it bang my hand during recoil since I'm holding that monster awful tight. My 416 rigby and 458 lott have the barrel mount. I would pick the rifle that feels the best. I think the barrel band guns ride lower on your shoulder if that matters.

What was the trophy fee on those blue things and which rifle did you use? They look dangerous

The 375 RSM is a tank. I cannot imagine that the stock mounted stud would be a problem.

My .270 Express Rifle has a barrel band. I have no idea what the purpose is, unless it is purely cosmetic.
