Pad replacement on Safari Express 375 Login/Join

Hey guys, just came in from putting the new Williams ramp and fiber optic bead on my Mod70 Safari Express in 375. It looks like it is right on in the collimater so I am hoping that when I get to the range (later this week?) it is close to right on. I had to raise the iron sights to get them close to where I see without bearing down on the stock with my cheek.

Anyways, reminded myself of how hard that factory pad was when I got the gun out of the safe. I want to replace it, I would like to put a pad on there that is soft but has a slick finish so it doesn't bind on my clothes. I have a Kick-eze on a couple of stocks, love the feel but they aren't slick. I'm wondering about the limbsaver? the grindable one looks like it has a smooth finish from the pics on their website. How does it stack up to the Kick-eze in feel?

Thanks guys.

PS
what wast he deal with the extractors on these, I asked before but forgot the answer. Thanks

Sorry no help on the pad. Could you please give me information on the sights you installed?

The best pad for not hanging up on clothes is a Silvers pad IMO. No, I take that back, it would be a metal buttplate. Wink But in my observation they do not absorb a lot of recoil.

I too have trouble w/ the fit of the factory stock w/ express sights. I've measured mine against several stocks that fit me well and found that the Winchester Classic stock is a bit too high. Great for scope, piss poor for iron sights. I on the other hand can take a bit of wood off and make it fit much better.

As far as the pad is concerned, I see no reason why it is necessary for a soft pad on a 375H&H if the stock fits you. I prefer a harder pad that does not give much and does not hang up. I have far greater control of the rifle that way.

I have a Silvers pad on my 9.3x62 and love it. Compared to my .375 H&H is doesn´t recoil at all!

Silvers is a classic!

Red, take a look at a red Pachmyer Decelerator. They are harder and not as gummy as a Kickeze, plus they hold up to rough treatment better. The red color looks good on a rifle, real good on a Winchester. It's about the same color as the pre-64 solid pads.

I replaced the hard Win. pad with the Pachmayr Decelerator and I'll say the recoil felt like it dropped 25-30%. Dosn't hang up on my cloths.

Stick with the kick-ez there is nothing better, just cover it with leather. I prefer black as my buddy has just completed one on my ruger, you'll never put anything different on your rifle's.

Maineguide, I hadn't thought about covering a kick-eze in leather, been thinking about trying to leather cover a pad anyways,s ounds like a good idea.

Gary, soft pads aren't Necessary, but I'll go for more comfort any day. I did about 25 rounds from the bench about 3-4 weeks ago when I took it to dial in the scope, and although I don't plan on shooting from the bench a lot, by the end I was happy I was done.

Rusty, The Safari Express I had came factory with NECG adjustable rear sight and Williams front sight (white bead). The way my cheekbones are I need a good amount of drop in the comb to feel comfortable behind irons, and the factory stock just wasn't going to work, the sights were right on but I had to really press my cheekbone down on it which felt like sparring practice or something.

I wrote to NECG and they ordered a new, unfiled (just a small square notch, no shallow V shape) blade for me from Germany, took quite a few weeks.

After it arrived I measured the difference in height and then figured out what I needed from Williams, basically about the highest setup they have I think. I got a new ramp and then rather than using the same bead I said what the hell and got one of their firesights (red fiber optic). Then waited for a backordered sight pusher (everybody who messes with open sights must get one, makes life very easy).

Now according to the Collimater they are about right on, I am going to try to get out and test later this week, along with testing the repeatability of the Leupold QR rings.

Take a look at the sporting clays pad made by Pachmyer. It is a decelerator but has a harder rubber insert on the top that slides rather than sticks when mounted. I use them on all my big bores with good results. thumb

Dago Red,

Does your LEU QR bases hangover the ejection port at all? Someone previously had posted that the LEU QRW and QR bases obstructed the loading port in some way, but I've never been able to confirm this.

Thanks,
Gary

Dago,

I love the Pachmyer Decelerator. They are great at absorbing recoil I and don't find them to catch on clothing.

And go with red....definetly red.

Regards,
Dave

I have a decelerator on some other rifles and have one actually sitting on the work table out there right now, but they aren't as soft as the kick-eze, which is why I like it, they do look good though. that one is the brown one.

Jarrod, I try to way what is traditional with what is functional/better and sometimes throw tradition out. I kept the white bead for it though and it is about a 2 min. job to change it now that I have the sight pusher.

Gary, yes the rear base hangs over the ejection port, this is not a problem as loading I'm coming in at an angle and from the front so it goes right in, no problem on ejection from it. I don't really LIKE that it does it, but it hasn't hurt anything or had a negative effect.

This rifle is one of the ones that made the cut recently when I decided to go to "more better" and get rid of superfluous ones in favor of finishing up some stuff on others and getting a couple built. since I plan on keeping it I'm doing whatever needs to be done to make it just right for me. I might even cut the length a touch on the stock.
