I recently picked up a Browning Safari grade Mauser in 300 win mag and I noticed that they made them in larger calibers like 375 h&h. Did FN make these on a magnum length action or did they just lengthen standard 30-06 length actions to fit?

They made them in 375 and 300 H&H, as well as 458 Win. It was the same standard M98 action used on all calibers. As for removing metal, this has been discussed many times on this form as well as others. Some say it is very dangerous, others say it is fine. I look at this way, Holland and Holland, Rigby, Cogswell and Harrison, Purdey, Westley Richards, Browning, Weatherby (early ones), Zastava and many other makers built 375 H&H length calibers on standard M98 Mausers. There have been thousands of custom rifles in that caliber built on the standard M98 also. I figure if it were any problem, the process would have stopped many years ago. You can still get a custom maker to build you a 375 H&H on a military M98 Mauser action. And to add a bit of fuel to the fire, Rigby among others have built a 416 Rigby on the standard action.

I do believe the standard 98 action was used.

Doesn't Winchester use the same length Model 70 for the 375 that they use for standard 30-06 length cartridges?

I am interested ---is your Browning 300 Win Mag barrel marked with 300 Win Mag on the barrel with the engraving or could it have been a 3006 or H & H that was rebarreled?

It is a factory 300 win mag, never been rebarreled.
